The Texas Parks and Wildlife will be holding several public hearings regarding the newly proposed speckled trout regulations. The meeting here will be at the Natural Resource Center (NRC) building on the TAMUCC campus next Tuesday from 6-8pm. Second building on the right when you come in the first entrance. The proposal is to drop the current trout regulations down to three fish from 17-23 inches for two years, from Matagorda bay south down to the border.

This is Deja Vu all over again. Exactly how the redfish limits got to where they are today. Started at 5 fish in the '80s and ended up where we are today. If I remember correctly the change from 5 to 3 was done approx. a year after the 5 fish limit was adopted.

Good deal. I hope they get on with it and get it passed soon. We need to give these trout a couple years to come back. There are definitely enough fish to repopulate and recover but the Laguna has never seen pressure like it has the last few years. We kept mainly black drum to eat this summer. There are certainly plenty of drum if you go looking and they taste good to me.

I agree with Mike or Speckled Trout. This will be put in place and will not change in our live times, just like the Redfish limits.

Boat prices so high, gas, repairs, and fishing equipment, I think it is getting soo expensive to fish and only keep a few fish for the money it costs to enjoy.

A tag system like with deer, or other game animals is the ultimate way to regulate the game fish. Each licensed person should have X number of tags for the year for whatever regulated fish. That being said, I realize there would still need to be limits for times like we are experiencing. Also, the new limits, if established will only be applicable for a couple of years if it's based on TXP&WL resource sampling, as in the past.

ANY proposed regulations on salt water trout are silly. There's a reason why you don't see them in food stores or on menus. They are only caught on a line and hook, and only by recreational fishing... They don't "school." There's no commercial market for them. And they are probably the most sustainable fish in any water. Don't take my word on it. Use your eyes.

I've seen the trout limits go from no limit in numbers or length to the current proposed limit of 3 in the past 71 years. I started fishing when I was 7. The biggest changes came after the freezes, with the exception in 2014, which was a crystal ball look into future people population and fisherpersons.
The best thing that could be done to maintain and increase the trout populations is stop the barge traffic in the ICW from Houston to Brownsville after a freeze. Please, to say the reason they don't is monatary. It's only happens around 10 years and I'm sure the barge companies could work with that. Those products are going to Mexico. They can wait.
To stop barges for a couple of days the save the trout population I really belive is the right way to go, with current 5 fish limit.

The redfish limits changed in the late 80's. I remember public hearings in the mid '80s. Although I did hear that a few years back TP&W attempted to
add another redfish to the slot limit but there wasn't a bunch of advertising to do so. I read an story in one of the lower coast newspaper. No takers?

Agree with it, just wish the left the bottom of the slot at 15". I'm not saying they have to discourage culling, but it makes no sense to encourage or even require it. If folks want to eat 3 16" trout let em.

Well beckey I wish I could agree with what your doing 110% but IMHO verbal agreements don't work and a hand shake and mans word has no value aymore.
The only way that they will get stopped is by a federal law being pass to stop the traffic. I'm sure Rep Mike Cloud will listen to the group your working with. He could put the bill on a add on of Pelosi's money give away and get it passed.

For those who don't know what happened in
2003..........
Spotted seatrout regulations were enacted
that created a maximum size limit of 25
inches with a bag limit of 10 fish, one of
which could be >25 inches in length.
Regulation of fishing guides also occurred
with the creation of a boat limit for paying
customers and the requirement that a
saltwater fishing guide in Texas also have
U.S. Coast Guard certification.
