This was just on KRIS 6, someone please tell me this isn't happening...
https://www.kristv.com/news/local-news/padre-island-national-seashore-turtle-program-facing-cuts
The above is poorly written, but at the end they get to the part about: In order to save the turtles, if the funding is cut for the program, which some of it already has (contrary to their statement), that since the turtles would be unprotected, they would close the beach from April-July.
There is a petition from a guy at Cos-Way linked in the article to stop it...

I read that today. Closing the beach during that time we have so much of a negative effect on Corpus Christi in so many ways.

Time to contact the Texas General Land Office again. This Fed turkle garbage would again violate the terms of the original conveyance of PINS from the State of Texas to the Feds. What part of it being required to be used by and for the general public do the Feds not understand (Hint - all of it! Turkles are always more important than people.) Here comes the WOKE brigade again.

I have not seen the Endangered Species Act Section 7 Consultation with NMFS, USFWS, NPS, or whoever, on the turtle's nesting mitigation strategies. That would be a question for the Park Biologist.

The turtle folks have always said that driving on the beach is detrimental to the nesting and the hatchlings getting back to the sea. BUT through lots of "Turtle Patrol" UTV's (read: Seasonal Temporary hires and vehicle funding), and egg collection and hatching, the effects of driving on the beach could be mitigated. Take away the money for hires, and UTV annual maintenance/replacement, and hatching the eggs, and the mitigation of the effects of driving on the beach are no longer in place.

Which means the Section 7 Consultation with NMFS or USFWS may no longer be applicable.

The above is just a guess based on years in the ESA Consultation chair.

(And this does not take into account any "Threaten to Sue" from environmental groups over the lack of funding to comply with any agreed upon consultations).

We definitely need to dump as much money as possible to the "get in a buggy and slow cruise the beach all day with my mouth open group" I enjoy them.. If your down there for long enough they are like a big mosquito...just buzzing by here and there

this is a slippery slope, first the turtles then they enviro junkies will say nesting birds are endangered. Hit google and see what happened with Cape Hatterass National Seashore it was a mess and killed the fishing economy for several years.

It's not just PINS. The enviro-whackos in the Xoa Bai Den regime are pushing to close all Feral land to the public.
