|

I'm in Dallas, but I've been driving down and fishing at PINS 1-2 times per year or so for the last 7 years. I also routinely run ultramarathons of 50-150 miles at a time, and I plan on running all ~65 miles of PINS on May 7-8, IF the weather decides to cooperate. My brother will be accompanying me in his 4x4 truck and providing me with food and water. I expect it to take around 12 hours, give or take an hour. I'd like to do it all in one go if possible, and not stop other than to eat or drink really fast. My main questions:
1. What direction does the wind normally blow, and does it depend on the time of day or year? If I want the wind at least partially at my back, should I be running from south to north or north to south? I'll only be running one way, so I'd rather not be going into the wind the whole time.
2. Is there a time of day that would be best for lower tides, or does it not making a difference since the run will take 12 hours? Is there a good chance that there won't be enough shoreline for me to run or drive on at all?
I know I'm at the mercy of mother nature with a lot of this, but any tips or advice would be humbly appreciated. Thank you! |

It looks like you will be leading up to a new moon resulting in 4 tides instead of just 2. Looks like Sat at around 9 am is the first low tide, with our prevailing winds and killer sun seems like I would want to start at the jetties around 4-5am and work my way north with the wind in your back and a good hard bottom to run on at low tide. |

At least 2 pairs extra shoes (if wearing shoes) in case high tides find you skirting the wet sand and catching some water later in the day(s)
headlamp and extra batteries for night flying
zinc oxide, etc for daytime flying
vinegar (unexpected jellyfish/man o' war splatter). Benedryl liquid and tablets.
extra fuel for the chase truck (y una escopeta). Ya never know.
jumper cables and en extra battery (or never turn the truck off)
Sat phone? Coast Guard capable radio? I know, only sea to land, not land to land....but, in an emergency...
Just some brainstorming, excuse me if this all is taken for granted _________________ "In your guts you know he's nuts" |

Running on sand is a pain in the foot, literally. It tears up the ankle something fierce.
You are going to be running thru a lot of people's fishing camps and I believe that 65 miles includes the National Seashore park where vehicles are not allowed. |

Regarding comm, anywhere along pins, if you can climb the highest dune near you, you will pick up a signal. I have had to do it quite a few times, "Darling, the truck broke down - will be later than i told you" = "Damn they're biting , later."

Thanks for the tips, everyone!
Yes, it is going to hurt and be painful. I'm expecting that. I'm also well prepared for the conditions, nutrition, etc,
My #1 question: which direction should I run to have the wind more at my back? North or South? |

Ha! Ha! The reason no one is answering your question about the direction of the wind, especially at this time of year, the weather forecasters can't even tell you with any assurance! That's why being a weather forecaster is the best job in the world, they never have to get it right! Look on your favorite weather forecast and determine for yourself which direction to run then you can't be sore at anyone, but the weatherman or women. |

definitely drive to jetties so you can know where the soft spots are and prepare for that, and plan to run north barring some random cold front. If the tide is high you're going to have a very hard time completing it, but more power to you for being a bad dude. |

God Bless you young Soldier. That's quite the challenge.
Having driven that section more-than-a few times, heading north after hour(s)+, and coming up on the 5 MM, and my head going, "......... Man, 5 more miles to go". I can't image how that would feel if I was not in a vehicle and still having 5 miles to go....
Best of luck. The support-vehicle advice you've got is spot on. |

Thank you, everyone! I plan to start the run around 3PM tomorrow at the jetty, on Friday May 7th. i expect it to take 10-12 hours. I'll be running north, and the wind SHOULD start from the east and the shift from the south, so I should get a good tailwind pushing me on the last half. If you see an older Z71 4X4 and a tall guy in black shorts running in the middle of the night/evening, be sure to say hi! |

Anyone know how this went for this guy - a very aggressive goal in a place where we know the conditions can change daily. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |
