Can anyone tell me what the old structure on Pita is? Looks like maybe an old manual ferry landing.
Also, any info on why it's named "Pita"?
Thanks in advance _________________ Steve-O

Looks like an old dock on the north side and there are some storage tanks on the island. Guessing all oil and gas related. I never walked the island but can tell you there is some serious mud surrounding it. I have always liked that island and named my boat Miss Pita. The name is unique and I have never seen any other reference to Pita other than "pain in the @ss". I thought it might have a Spanish origin and have not found anything there either. It could be the name of a well that was on the island or someone's first girl friend that broke their heart. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

| Now you have me interested! Trucks, dock, etc. ? I guess there has been a lot of bulldozer work to make it an island. Needless to say, I'm totally confused how it would have ever been accessible by trucks? |

| I would have thought if they were trucking it, the trucks would have been on a barge. There used to be a substantial barge dock on Laguna Shores Rd back over toward SPID ways. Just thinking kid of out loud.......cC |

| Yep the trucks came over by barge and often times by that barge dock on Laguna shores. I used to stay out of my upper deck and just watch them. |

Stumbled across a bit of Pita interest....
In 1999 a prehistoric human burial eroded from the landward coast of Pita Island and was found by a kayaker. There is an extensive report about it's investigation. _________________ kick your shoes off and cast a line |

Pita is one of the very few natural islands in the laguna, however it was augmented by dredging the access channel back in the early 50's.....yes, the barges from the Exxon dock off laguna shores used to take trucks out there to maintain the oilfield equipment...there are several pipelines that come straight in off the gulf that used to feed the barney davis power plant, and there were several "christmas trees" out there....
Pita used to be called "Pito" but somewhere along the line the name changed on the maps, likely due to some local drunk fishermen....the Dunn ranch folks used to drive the cattle from padre island right around where the end of whitecap is now across the laguna and by/through/around Pita onto the King Ranch and then on to markets...
Pita is now mainly managed by the Audubon folks as a bird nesting island...and it's that time of year, and I can hear all the laughing gulls getting wound up all day....

Correct... Barges work boats used to run the area south of spid jfk area to service well tank farms ect... I am digging up some old pictures from my fathers archive to post here of this. Also used to burn gas off to get to the oil in some areas so there were flare stacks. Fishing was awsome he said. Let me get to diggin. _________________ Long time avid fisherman rod builder. |
