Are you fans of all that cork on the butt? |
if you cast with 2 hands, it all adds to your reach, which is the entire point of taking out this rod.
The Loomis GL2, btw, is 25-y-o.
The light-in-hand short-handle rods have their place, but it's probably not in the surf
The only rod I've ever broken is that Omen Green ML. On my kayak, was taking the lure out of the water at the boat and a red grabbed it. I set with the rod high just as he exploded - the two of us did the only two things simultaneously that would break it. I though it was abuse, and contacted 13Fishing about their discount replacement. They told me it was warranty and I had a new rod in 10 days. Honestly, the two IM6 rods I showed before would probably take that abuse without breaking.
I also have some Japanese UL rods - they call them rockfish rods - 8' and 8'3" - they're really a hoot for casting grams out of sight, and a real blast on schoolie specs.
They're made to protect 2-lb test, and fish 6-lb braid great.
this 8'er is rated 3-10-lb test, 1-5 g, which is 1/32nd to 3/16ths oz lures.
Where they really shine is dock-fishing the lights, and this is one I trust to take out on the kayak.
wading the center shoal at Little Cut, imitating winter glass minnows, could cast to either cut bank.

Buiding rods i see your guys older ones and i do still build a few with long cork grips but most now days are split with none above the reel seat. I personally like the older long handle but u have to work sand down to lighten or balance out the rig. Burl cork lately has been trash been having to get alot to get decent rings. My split handles with eva and such are a bit longer i like to get out there with the distance workin topwaters avoiding hull slap as was mentioned before. I think ive rebuilt 2 of my old Falcon lowriders already still great rods. Yall be safe take care n take someone fishing. _________________ Long time avid fisherman rod builder. |

If the Japanese UL rockfish rod interests you for winter glass minnows, you can build one from a 7'6' or longer fly rod blank, 3-4-wt.
For comparison, the full grain weight of a 4-wt fly line is just over 1/4 oz.
The rockfish rod tapers almost exactly match a good dry-fly rod.
The progressive fly rod tip lets you cast the light stuff, 1/32-oz jigs, and the stiff butt gives you power to turn fish.
The short UL rods they sell on our side of the big pond are para tapers, with fast tip and all the flex in the mid and butt - exactly where the long rockfish rods are fast and stiff. |

Fantastica beast rod by ABU (not sure of spelling)
I have several custom rods and ABU matched with a no level-wind long-distance reel from ABU is a great all round rod. _________________ Fin in the wind |

My latest reel tinkering project, B/D present to get me through the summer -
a pair of '95 6500 C3CT's, reducing one w/ barstock frame + axle to 5500 width, and shallow spools for light braid.
they'll hold 200 and 300 yds 15-lb braid (which is probably closer to 18-lb)
will also rebuild a deep 6500 spool for heavier braid or fluoro.
Added internal-set mag, and will tune the narrow reel for 1/4-oz, the wide reel for 2 oz.
Waiting on my first rod, 8' 1/4- to 1-oz from Rich Hedenberg.
Nothing fancy, but the 78-mm feet on the barstock frames need custom real seat.
Second rod will be 11' 1 to 4 oz.
Also pretty amazing how much weight and inertia they shed with the new parts. |
