|
|
So I finally ordered me a fly rod made for saltwater and I took it out to the surf the day after it arrived. All I had on me were two frog poppers but they killed in the surf. It was so much fun and it was extremely exciting to see those trout come out of the water for my fly. Here is the video of you want to check some of the excitement I had:

I would definitely recommend trying to fly fish the surf to anyone. What other flies should I try in the surf? |

honestly tough to beat a small popper, but my go-to fly would be hi-tie - for trout you're good on a size 2 hook.
It casts like a thread and pushes a lot of water.
Probably won't find it exactly in a fly shop bin, but should find similar bucktail flies on stainless hooks.
Those tiny poppers (below) can be amazing on the bay - my buddy caught a slot red one day by accident, just wading back to the boat and dragging his line.
took this photo to show my dock-fishing choices - the marabou whistler fly on the lower right is totally spec-slimed.
If you don't already have it, next thing you want to take to the surf is an intermediate sinking line (slime line), such as Airflo Beach - they cast farther because of smaller line diameter, sink ever so slowly, and behave as neutral density, eliminating the need for weight to sink your fly, and making your fly act much more like live bait. |

I like your dock flies, Is the little whistler just marabou, chenille and bead chain? _________________ It's not the destination, the journey is everything. |

sorry, bro, just saw this.
yes, it's the simplest fly
x-wrap the bead chain first, marabou tail, this one uses sparkle chenille for the body, and shrimpy chenille for the head.

You can get a lot of flies from one marabou feather by clipping the stem every half-inch or so, and twisting a couple of the pieces together before you tie it in.
I've found the larger bead chain takes more fish - I think it's because it casts the profile of a swimming crab on slow retrieve. |

Interesting, I figured it would look more like a small baitfish. I can definitely see how it would take the profile of a small crab though. Pretty cool. Thanks man. Here's that cactus chenille and marabou one i was talking about.

that looks pretty fishy.
My dock flies are tied on size 6 1x salt hooks, which makes them about the smallest you'd ever want to fish.
I try to keep the tails short on dock flies, also, because dock trout like to bite short. |
