Nobody in town had the weights I needed and I was bored to tears sitting at home, so I decided to make some fishing weights.

If the pictures and description don't properly, I'll see about fixing it.

Wow. Very well done. Dunno if I'd have the patience for the lead up (no pun intended). I've only ever made surf weights-- melted lead o-rings from old toilet settings poured into the different sized lug holes on a cross lug iron. Use old copper wire from decent gauge copper wiring twisted for an eyehole and long enough on the ends for the spiders. Only problem I ever had was being too close to the crucible while melting the lead before pouring into the lug....talk about a head rush.... Very Happy

Thanks for sharing.

Nice work. Just like hunger buster, I've only made surf weights, spider weights. A friend of mine worked at discount tires gave me a couple of jars full of lead from balancing tires.

I wonder how much Bondo it would take to mold one of those fish shaped downrigger balls (approx 8lb weight). Ive got plenty of lead, but the molds are pricy

FoldCatOne: They're really not that expensive at $72 for the mold. An 8 Lb. ball is $80. You make one ball and it pays for itself.

With that said, I'm sure you could make a mold with a quart can of Bondo if you build a compact enclosure. The problem I see with that is that it will take a good while to mix that much Bondo at one time. It hardens really fast. Furthermore, you will subject the mold to a great deal of heat as opposed to a small weights like mine. Truth be told, I don't know how well the Bondo would stand up to a large volume of molten lead.

I used to have one of those 8 Lb. Do-It molds many years ago, but I gave it to my nephew who's been divorced twice since then. Conjure up your own story there on where it may have wound up! LOL
