Anyone do any fishing on the river upstream of the boat ramp? Seen that you can catch anything from reds to bass. Wondering what baits or lures would be good to try. Thanks i advance!

Around 1983 I had access to a ranch on the Mission River to, initially, fish his stock ponds for bass. After whiffing on the ponds I took my spinner bait down to the river to fish, for bass I thought. The reds started biting and landed several with the largest going 27 inches. This was mid April.

So, after 37 years passing, I am going to recommend the brown/orange spinner bait with twin bronze Colorado blades😁

During the drought (circa 2015) when salinity levels were high me and a client were regularly catching limits of reds with both trout and bass mixed in. Never thought I would have a mixed bag like that. Saw lots of big gar in the same waters. Client would run trot lines for catfish and said he would frequently get keeper redfish on his lines. I assume their location in any tributary is highly dependent on the amount of freshwater.

It's been a while since I asked this but I figured I would give an update. Caught some keeper reds (all over 25") and trout with RattleTrap replicas. Yet to catch any Bass. There are lots of gar, tons of small ones. My guess is a large spawning period after Harvey? Looking to get a boat now, nothing fancy 14' Flat or V-bottom with a small outboard. Just to cruise the River and see what's out there.

I know a man, and some of you may know whom I speak of, that remembers not only fishing Mission River, but remembers there being an automobile bridge there before the big bridge was built. He still swears by it, and he was and still is a 'freshwater' fisherman. He doesn't go there as much as he did in his younger years, but he has recommended it to me several times and I still have yet to visit. I'm coming soon. Wink
