My uncle rented a place out on Jamaica Beach that has a dock for our Mako Pro skiff. Has anyone been out there bayside on West Galveston Bay by Jamaica Beach? Im wondering how rough it gets and if its fishable in a 17 foot pro skiff. Looking at the satellite pictures it looks like sticking to the southeast shorelines would be the safest bet. Anyone run this area in a small boat and have any advice on places that are safe and places to avoid?

It's been long enough since I've been in West Bay that there have been a couple of hurricanes, so I'm not your best source of information. However, I will say it an awfully shallow bay and the hurricanes may have made it worse. I will encourage you to go to 2coolfishing.com and see what you can learn about it. 2coolfishing.com is to the Houston/Galveston area what Corpusfishing.com is to the Corpus area. Good luck and enjoy!

I can't offer an answer to your request for Jamaica Beach info but I WILL offer this advice re the 2CoolFishing website. It's an ad-filled very commercially oriented website with very few useful forums and LOTS of trivial forums.
For a more sensible forum for the upper Texas coast area, go to

www.dosfrios.com.

I believe it was formed by some 2CF expatriates who tired of the ad-filled drivel, site admin politics and one-celled brain posters.

Good luck and good health.

I have fished Galveston West Bay for years. The best advice is to purchase a Top Spot Map (or Hot Spot). The coves on the south shoreline are great. Dana's Cove, Snake Island Cove are some of my favorites. I can spend all day in Snake Island area. The bay is shallow but you will be fine in that boat. Yes there are reefs and sand bars you need to watch for the map has them listed and will give you the best guide beside hiring a guide to take you.

I could not agree with you more on your reference to 2coolfishing.com, and thanks for referencing the OP to an alternate site. I have not gone to 2coolfishing.com for many years for the reasons you sighted, but did not know an alternate site for information about the Galveston bays.

I find the fingerpointing from dosfrio to 2cool hilarious, since the exodus there is waaayyyyy less drama on 2cool and plenty on dos. So, who was the real problem? The ads can be annoying on 2cool but for fishing info just use the search and you will find 100 fold the amount compared to dos. The fishing forums on dos have very little traffic, mostly just griping about libs and 2cool lol.
