I've been curious about fly fishing. I had a split bamboo rod in the late 50's that I used for bluegill fishing. The Corpus Christi Fly Fishing Club(formerly Laguna Madre FFC) holds a casting clinic the first Saturday of each month, behind Roy's. I decided to go.
Considering I hadn't fly cast in over 60 years, I did reasonably well. I watched eight videos by Mad River Outfitters before going, which helped. Don and George were very helpful and were diplomatic in telling what I was doing wrong. Nice group of guys there. Not only did they critique my casting, they answered a lot of my beginner questions about gear, fishing from my kayak or skiff, lures(flies and poppers), and how much I should have to spend to get started. After I get some gear and practice a lot, I'll go back for a review.
Thanks again, CCFFC! TexasJim

I would try to talk you into a 7-1/2' or 8' glass rod, especially if sitting in the kayak is part of your plan.
A 9' graphite rod is a definite advantage if you can stand or wade to cast.

Thanks, bulldog. I have a lot of questions for you, before I make a splurge into flyfishing. I probably will only flyfish from the foredeck of my skiff.
I was wondering about your Arroyo trip. Great time. I was in Harlingen the weekend before you went. Virtual Spring! I'll be back to SPI 2/20, but may not be able to fish, aarrggh!

thanks, bro - I was using the fly rod for dock-fishing change up, and caught a stringer spec on it every day.
Forgot to mention on my thread OP, the 19" spec was my last fish on my last limit Sunday night, and was a great way to end the trip.
