A softball buddy of mine just came by the house along with his wife to show me their new boat. It is a SCB 24ft with a 300 Suzuki on it. Fully loaded list for 117 k. They let me take it for a ride and it is awesome. It turns without leaning into anything even at 40 45 miles an hour. also it jumps straight up out of the water when you're taking off no rear end drag to grab into the sand. But at 117 k that's way beyond my price grade. When we got back I was teasing him that it doesn't compare to my dargel over there. That's when his wife said yeah but that boat has caught more fish than all of our boats combined. A boat that goes that fast I would definitely get in trouble with. I'm satisfied with my 28 miles an hour.

Was that you all throwing a rooster tail heading south out of Laguna Reef a couple hours ago? Very Happy

I don't know what was coming out the back I didn't look. Could have been. We went straight East out into the flats towards the intracoastal and then turned around and came back

I'm with you Zia, $117K! A couple of years ago the same boat or similar with a 300 Evinrude, maybe Shallow Sport or Shoalwater, was at a boat show at Bluff's Landing and the price was $72K, and I thought that was much more than I would consider. To think that we are talking about another approximate $50K a couple of years later for a similar rig is shocking! I'm happy with my 20 year old rig which cost much less anyway. I was just filling out an insurance criteria form a couple of days ago and one of their questions was did my boat run 60 mph? My answer was no, but what it didn't ask was did I want to go that fast? My answer is again, no! My wife wants a pull string on my ignition for anytime I get near 40! I love the ideal of getting there faster, but not at the cost of someone's life and limbs. I hope your friend has, as much sense, as he had money and holds his speed down. Hopefully, time on the water will do that?

I bought mine used for 12k and go 28 miles an hour and am more than happy. although when you go 2 minutes from home you don't need to get there that fast. LOL

My theory in a nutshell. I bought a 1971 Whaler, rebuilt it in the garage and put a used Honda on the back. About 9K.

I have you beat on the speed though, it will do 30 with a tailwind assuming I lave the wife at home. Shocked

I guess we will be seeing a memorial announcement for you if your wife ever reads this! Laughing

John, Zia and I seem like "birds of a feather", because my 20 year old rig resulted from my buying a new 23' hull from the manufacturer of Explorer, including a 4' X 8' deck with the console fiberglassed to it for $7m. I didn't want the gas tank under my console, nor under the primary deck(floor), so I had to figure out how to situate it otherwise. I brought the hull to CC with the deck /console and had Bill Bouker(sp?) build a stand out of aluminum to mount the deck/console on and had a 60 gallon aluminum tank built by Florida Marine Tanks to go under the elevated deck. After getting the primary rig assembled I began to wire and rig the rest of it while I found a used 150 HP Yamaha ProV for $4m to mount on it. After a few years I decided it was under powered, plus I got tired of dealing with cleaning the carbs, so I re-powered with a 200 HP Yamaha HPDI engine in 2007. The only thing I've changed since is a new (third) trolling motor had to be acquired recently. I do all of my repairs, etc. except the 2007 engine was swapped out by a dealer per Yamaha rules for warranty purposes. A new aluminum trailer replaced my old galvanized trailer two years ago. I enjoy working on and rigging the boat almost as much as fishing! I would encourage anyone to assemble their own rig, because there is nothing else which will give you the peace of mind when you are far from home in a boat like one you put together yourself.

That's a house!!!

How do people afford these toys? Plus boat insurance and on-the-water fuel costs, dock rentals and/or marina fees??? This is becoming PARALLEL to what it costs to rent an airplane. And I've done more than my fair share of that to run myself into a controllable amount of student debt before pulling the plug, but sheesh. You can buy a Cessna 172 for that price!

I want a toy too, but it's going to have to be way more modest than that. I'll just add the good stuff to it as I can afford it.
