I've been going to pins longer than i can remember. The only thing that has ever kept me out is when the gates were locked. I've camped with the water coming up to the dunes and nothing really scares me anymore. With that being said I'd like to understand why sometimes tides are higher or lower than normal. Can somebody explain how the pressure works and the moon affects the tide, and what causes higher than normal seas other than the obvious hurricane or extreme weather event? Thanks in advance!

But just remember, Moon 'phase' isn't that big of a deal. It's all about gravitational pull, and that mass does not change whether the Moon is not illuminated, partially illuminated, or fully illuminated. It more the alignment of the Moon, relative to the Earth, and the Sun.

As far as the endless higher-than-normal tides that just won't drain off of this year???? Maybe we ain't as smart as we thought. Harmonic Tidal predictions are notorious for being wrong, it's just how wrong they are when you really notice it.

Other factors include the amount of freshwater moving through the bay systems - recent rains.

I have this photo from Estes last April after a 24-hr beating NNW wind pushed all the water out of the bays - this is shortly after high tide.
Two weeks ago, this shoal was 3-4' deep.
This is the April next day on the E wind - my salt-newbie buddy Mark caught 20 trout in an hour in the wind-eddy that formed in the cut coming off Aransas Bay.
