A couple of observations and dont shoot me.
Bulldog is about right in the VERY minimal thermostat change. Several years ago CPS put out a video/statement that showed that leaving your thermostat at the same or very close VS going from 74is (7 to 85 when you leave and trying to cool back down in the evening when you return actually uses more electricity and gives a much less comfortable home. BECAUSE while the air may cool the furniture, bed, walls and floor are still at a temp that causes the cooling unit to run continuously. I thought bull when I heard it but tried it and it was true. I didnt change the thermostat for a month (august) and the bill was only about $5 more.
That said if I understand what bulldog posted earlier, we have some issues but the wind farms CAN NOT be profitable for POWER COMPANIES unless they are heavily subsidized with our tax dollars. Thereby WE are paying for them to be able to make money and paying for electricity that WE are not getting the benifit of anyway. I started my career in electric power 39 years ago, changed firms and added petrochem 10 years after that, and still work in both industries.
Maybe I see the big picture, or think I do, I'm a total proponent of the way CPS apportions their production and operations, and can't complain about the bill I receive.
I absolutely see nothing wrong with wind farms, and see great benefits.
I promise you the Port of Corpus Christi sees nothing wrong with them, either.
The entire power grid works on base-load plus peak (high demand), and the grid is always required to buy excess power from independent small power producers first, to keep those big base-loaded coal plants throttling down just a bit.
Not a single power company would buy wind turbines if they were not profitable for them - they answer to their shareholders, rate payers, and the state railroad commission.
Whatever tiny portion of your federal income tax that's paying the subsidy is buying us clean and completely fuel-free and emissions-free electricity - and your income tax has been going down - I know mine went down a lifestyle change over the past year.
Without those wind farms, You pay more for electricity and increase our national emissions load.
So what greed - we already worked Boone Pickens out of picking our pockets
Which is the real problem, greed or internet gripe-mongering
the gripe mongers, btw, are asking to take your money.

And to what purpose? Entertainment.

But I have friends in Corpus, and know there's a big difference in base rate here and there.
I also lived in Austin when they protested themselves out of STNP, and CPS quietly bought their shares.
I also adjust my thermostat around the sun load. Always go to bed and get up cool, at noon let it warm up a degree, again about 4p, and take those two cool degrees back after sunset. The logic is so the a/c compressor gets regular rests. |
What do you have it set on most of the time. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

Donnie,
It's set to 74 from 9p to noon, up to 75, and finally 76 at 4p, then work down those two cooler degrees after sunset.
If it resets itself, it sets to 75.
Those numbers may also not be calibrated, but they're cozy and work for me. |

Gotcha - what you are doing and what you learned from the cps video, is in line with what I know from a life time of living in this climate. Thanks for the info. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |
