Every time I spend a day with a flyrod on the flats I learn new things. Today I learned that a bead chain Clouser can catch more than redfish in skinny water. I saw tails tipped in blue waving above the surface and placed the fly in front of the fish. It didn't strike as hard as a solid red, but we danced for a while and muddied up the water before he went on the stringer. I tried other flies but none worked as well as the simple but elegant lure in chartreuse and white.
The red followed the lure to the kayak and I literally swiped it in front of his face right at the nose of the kayak. The strike was loud and violent as the fish took off across the flats. He measured 28 inches on the dot, so on the stringer he went too. The third fish was around the corner in 6 inches of water with a hundred homies, all of them tailing and sunning their backs. I snuck close enough to punch the fly into position against the wind and hooked up, but it spooked the entire bunch of fish. It was a noisy and muddy mess everywhere as fish ran for the exits and deeper water, lol. I think I like fly fishing |
