I have a new Penn Spinfisher VI 6500 on the way. Its going on a 12' fast action graphite (academy) pole for long casting on PINS.

I have a 9500 spooled up with 65 or 80. Cant remember (feels like 80 PP)

I am trying to decide whether to spool the new one up with 30 or 50 lb power pro since I have a 500 yd spool of each. It will hold 485/30 or 335/50. Dont have 40 in house.

I am trying to chunk it waaaay out there. No specific thing in mind. Hoping for reds and jacks. Might try to chunk lures with it if I can on occasion.
Whats your advice.

Kind of obvious, you'll cast farther and have more running room with the 30 lb, but you might like dealing with the larger diameter 50-lb better.
If that 30-lb braid starts to coil on you, especially at night, you'll be cussing it.
I've never been a fan of casting braid, but use it for backing on most reels.
I still buy Seaguar fluoro in bulk spools, and prefer it for working line on top of braid.
My choice would be 30-lb braid for backing and 100 yds 20-lb Blue Label on top, but that's personal preference.
(I fish 12-lb inshore and back with 15-lb Yo-Zuri braid)
You'll probably never have your drag set more than 5-8 lbs.

spool with the 30, and then tie on a top shot of 65 (or 80) lb power pro, maybe 15 yards, then a swivel to whatever terminal tackle...the increased diameter of the power pro top shot helps with handling it, and shock when really laying into a cast....

don't forget to flip your bail over when using one of Nicks' Cannons! LOL! ask me how I know

If you forget to flip the bail, I've snapped the tops of an LDX and HDX more than once, because i suck. But Nick is great on replacements. I agree with senior J in principle, but I use 50 spider braid on all of my surf rods with 80-100lbs mono shock leader (10-12 yards...just into a few wraps on the spool when resting) and home made terminal drops with the old school drop floats. The braid is so thin it pays to go bigger than smaller; it'll even take a good shark if your rig is right. The only thing that ever stops a good cast is the operator...and more often than not, that's me... But the knot between the shock and braid has to be done right.

We run straight braid on all of our spinning reels. Usually 30-50 power pro with no issues.

Ok
I put 30lb power pro on the spinfisher 6500. Have not added top shot. Got 500 yards on it and a 12' pole.
I have the 9500 with 80lb power pro and 85lb top shot.

Ok Ill have to admit now Im cheating a little I went to Basspro and thought I was picking up a Battle II 5000 actually they substituted a 6k. Little frustrated but It will work. Put 30lb spider wire on it for fishing closer in and luers with an 8" pole and no top shot yet but.....

Am planning on being down on PINS this week/end Thursday - Sat ...... Sun if they are really biting and I dont get swamped in by the tidal surge.
Great thing that the wife likes fishing as much as I do and never wants new Reels, She likes my older ones.

Just for grins and giggles most guys want a BIGGER FLAT SCREEN ++++
She had to force me to get a flat screen and now she wants larger and NO she is not a spender or Diva etc etc. Wow just the reverse of most.

Becky I have been watching the warnings they are giving. Currently they are leaving it at "Until 7am" wed morning. However the wind is even stronger on Thursday Im kind of wondering about that.

Good thing (I hope) is that high tide is mid day more or less. Hoping that way I cant get flooded or truck sunk in the middle of the night.
Does that sound right?

You might want to try Sufix 832 it is the tightest weave braid on the market and cuts the through the wind better then most at any pound test.
