My father said my grandfather found this fishing float on the island in the 40's. As far as I know, the rope is original. Pretty cool find. What kinds of things have you found?[img][/img]

Lots of sea beans, driftwood, various ship/boat items, coconuts, and unique shells throughout my many years. There seems like there is always something to find, especially at PINS.

Best/weirdest find:
One time my dad and I were down island a ways (~20 to 25 mm) on a fishing/camping trip and we came across a white bucket with a blue lid that seemed to be in pretty good shape for being shore trash. We of course wanted it to keep bait or fish in, but when we picked it up it was extremely heavy and obviously had something in it. Since we didn't know what it was and we were also in a hurry on our way off the island, we decided to throw it in the truck and open it when we got to the big trash bins by the south beach gate.

Well, we wish we hadn't done that. Immediately upon opening the lid, we were surrounded by an absolutely awful, foul odor because the bucket we thought was watertight was not! Inside we found the bucket jam packed with a few sets of heavy clothing that looked to be hand made, but of course all soaked in sea water. Our first and only assumption was that it probably came from an illegal immigrant aboard a boat and went overboard in rough seas or something. It was all too stinky and ruined for us to sort through, so we trashed it and left. I'll never forget that one though!

Ha. I thought you were going to say you found a head in there. One year after a big storm, maybe around 2007 or so, there were all kinds of things on the beach. I drove around toilets, computer screens, new telephone poles, etc. One guy came driving by with a lowboy containing all kinds of lawn furniture he found somewhere.

Shocked Laughing

To be honest, we only were able to look through the top few layers of folded clothing but the stench was so foul we couldn't go any further. For all we know there may have been. LOL

I always find junk and trash from boats that have Mandarin or Portuguese or Spanish written on it. Nothing terribly exciting unfortunately.

Same here. I always hear about these great beach find stories, but all I find is plastic.

I found a piece of silver plate from a Spanish shipwreck and threw it back when I was 18.
It was years before I realized what it was.

This was so cool, I thought it would get lost in the Off Topic Forum. Glass net floats used to be fairly common when I was a kid ( note giving age away ) in California. I was always told they came from fishing nets in Japan and floated across.
Beats those feet they found in Sneakers up in the Northwest several years ago!

Yep, those are Japanese fishing balls. Long ago when I lived on Guam they would wash up fairly often. I have two of those green ones. Clear obne that is smaller. A blue one that is the biggest. Japanese used them for floating their fishing nets before they discovered cork. I've seen them for sale on ebay.

Found a Pat O'Brien's Koozie right after Katrina/Rita.

Had a buddy find a street sign from some Avenue in Mississippi. He sent it back to a resident there and there was write up in the local paper.

Same buddy has a kayak washed up from Ike. Same trip he also found a park bench that he kept.

I found this Gaff today. It's about seven or eight feet long. Goes well with some other things I found out there like this rope and net hanging on my fence.

We have found a lot of "beach glass" on Bolivar Beach, and an old Mirro Lure which was sand blasted like the glass. We have put the glass in a couple of clear glass jar like lamps which we use on our bedside tables. Love combing the beach!

But yeah, sweet float.
