Jeff Wolda of Padre Island Light Tackle Adventures invited Outdoor writer, David Sikes, and I to tag along as he took some good friends down the beach looking for jacks. We found them working bait under Pelicans and terns and they were huge.

Then finally this!

These jacks were huge. There were spanish mackerel around and plenty of sharks. Beach Bum lost a big jack to a shark. Pompano, and whiting were also caught. The water hyacinth is worse on the north end of the beach.
Great seeing Prof Salt and Tod too. They had been kayaking offshore.

So, proof you do catch fish.

With all the species, seems like you all had a great time.

It was great seeing you guys, and really great seeing y'all on some good fish! Fishing with friends, beautiful weather, big fish, and an element of danger: I love these days on the beach.

Tyler, my jacks had similar blotchy patterns. Any idea why the coloration of these fish is a little more interesting than most jacks?

I really got the heebie jeebies wading way out to that first bar in Big Shell. The water wasn't all that clear and the current was strong. I really felt like I was part of the food chain. Jeff had already had a shark longer than he was pass by him.

I have no idea what caused the splotches on the jacks. Do they light up like bonito and dolphin after a long fight? I had unusual splotches on me after fighting one over 45 minutes and losing it in the wash. Very Happy

Hilarious! I don't know what causes it (on the fish), but haven't noticed jacks "lit up" like some species do when they're excited.

...and the sharks are always providing an undeniable undertone of risk, especially down south. I was really surprised that Tod and I didn't have any problems farther offshore. This time of year the sharks show up and they tend to be more aggressive than usual and steal some of our catches. Maybe you guys kept them distracted for us. Thanks!

Mary and I took a ride South of Bob Hall yesterday and I took my rod and lures was going to try for some Jacks. Water was pretty Brown at this end so we just sat on the beach and drink beer. I'd love to be able to get down there and get some Jack's on lures sometime.. it's been a while. Last time I did it I was with Billy

Silver spoons though topwaters and swimbaits would work too!
