I am starting my semi annual plan to be back in Corpus/Padre.Condo rented out on the island and starting the tackle prep process. I was talking with my sister and her family about them needing a few more reels for when we all go and ran across this deal. I know its not the absolute best but if you know someone money is tight or kiddo needing a setup here you go

I must be looking at the wrong location. As I did not see any discounts or clearance banners on the website for them.

I actually have that exact combo. I bought the 8' rod with the 6000 model reel. Love it, but thought it was too much reel for that size rod. So I relocated it to my surf rod (10' - not a Penn) and put the smaller Fierce II 5000 reel on the 8' Pursuit II rod. I love it. I think it's a much better reel for the rod.

I used to like combos, but I'm seeing less and less that I'm happy with. I don't know if that's my age & preferences increasing or my fishing knowledge increasing (or both), but lately I put together my own setup.

My latest purchase: a 6'6" Ugly Stik GX2 with a Penn Fierce II 4000 to replace my ailing, 25+ year old "Ol' Lucky", a Shakespeare Contender rod with a Diawa Regal-S 2505B reel. It was the set I grew up on, and it's caught 1000s of perch, hardheads, and whiting over its many years. After several repairs, the reel had finally had it, so I am planning to buy wall hangers for it to memorialize it. As far as it's replacement goes, I couldn't find a combo I liked, so I just made one of my own. And I love it. The Fierce IIs are more expensive than the Pursuit IIs, but they're both great reels IMO. And Ugly Stik is my go-to brand for mid-range rods.

Good mid-range products for us budgeted fisherpeople. I know there's better stuff out there, but I can't afford it most of the time. (I spent $150 & change on my surf rod without a reel, biggest single fishing gear purchase I've ever made). But I have an old friend who has a saying - the rods and reels they make now in the mid range that you find at places like Wal Mart and Academy are well capable of catching the same fish everyone else does, they just may wear out faster. They're built to be replaced and not so much repaired now - much like cars. But take care of it and it'll still last for years. That's also why I love spinning reels - the open face makes them so much easier to clean & care for. Just a quick rinse in fresh water and they're good. Just don't forget to oil the underparts every so often, and clean out any contaminants.

Shane - make sure you scroll down on that site and look at the Pursuit II. It is the one with the lowered price. The Pursuit III is not discounted.

Looks like first time buyer on the website gets an additional 10% off. At least that was the pop-up I got. Thanks for the Deal Alert!

Glad someone was able to get some use out of it.

I only get to hit the salt one week a year as I live 12 hours away, so not practical to spend big $$ on something I use 1 week a year.

My family as well as my sisters family spend a week on the island and nice to have everyone some decent rods/reels to use. I still have a couple of my dad's setups from when he lived in CC back in 60s and early 70s but they are now just kept for the memories.

Mine showed up in the mail yesterday, pretty fast shipping. They are in blister packs. Four reels shipped in two separate boxes.

Now I just had to find out what the heck I did with all my bulk spools of braid. Confused

easy for me to find my line spools, milk crates are great for storing gear and almost all kayak sternwells have a slot shaped just for them.
