Several years ago I was fishing a large school of jack cravelle using bait. Billy S. and a partner pulled up and asked ( I thought it was cool they asked ) if they could join in the action. They were fishing fly rods with white buck tails. We all continued catching fish for close to an hour.
Point of this , does anyone fish buck tails in the surf with bait cast or spinning gear ? Say 1-2 oz or so.
I know they are popular up north but don't see them used much in these parts. Maybe I haven't paid attention tho.

I try to remember to keep one with me.
I murdered the reds and drum with a 1/4 oz bucktail at Bird Island Basin a while back and my friend waded over to see what I was using.
He muttered to himself and shook his head for the whole ride home.
Scent is a big plus. Just rub it on any fish you catch or dunk it in Gulp juice and it will catch even more fish.

My son was about 8 years old and we were fishing by Pureoil Channel and we were rubbing our soft Plastics on the sides of specks we caught. My son then started calling it super duper speck juice. We were catching fish all over the place including his still personal best 32 inch redfish. It was almost as big as he was

I seldom fish bucktails because of the floating grass most days in the ULM.
I have switched almost completely away from jig heads and I use screwlock worm hooks because they pick up less grass.
Does anyone have a source for weedless-by-design bucktails? Not just a jighead with a weedguard?
Then, I propose we retire to our man caves and get busy designing the next big thing.

Thanks for the responses. I am primarily interested in long rod usage on the beach. Probably 1.5 to 2 oz with a trailer or curly tail of some sort. Maybe a pork rind which I used with success bass fishing in east Texas.
Wondering if they would adapt to the beach.

Years ago fishing PINS a lot with my Ol' fishing buddy Paul Stallings we would long rod chunking Mr. Champ/Kastmaster spoons with buck tails chasing jacks and whatever. Lots of fun...........cC

Bucktail jigs are popular in Florida, too. They like to use eggbeaters over there as well.

hi-tie is my all-around coast fly, casts like a thread - it's caught everything, specs, reds, black drum, smacks, kings, jacks...
This one has synthetic sky blue, but all you need are a natural bucktail for the white and colored bucktails for the darker stacks. Kevlar thread.
Doll eyes and epoxy head are optional.
