This is from a few years back. 3 of us caught these in one day fishing together. I think the grand total was 220 or 221. All fish were cleaned and distributed among our friends...none went to waste.

And the K.Brevis levels in them were off the charts! "Me being jealous of said catch because I wasn't in on it" This one makes the Gollas look like conservationists! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| Wow! What a haul! Looks like the commission missed placing a limit on pomps! I guess since they are an Gulf or ocean dwelling species there is no concern for over fishing them or is this like the 50s for the trout and reds? I've never fished for pomps, so I'm only aware of what I have read about them being somewhat elusive, or are they? Maybe they are like any other animal or fish, you just have to learn their habits? |

They fight very hard for the 2 lbs or so average that i have seen. The flesh is coarse and i cut the blood lines out - lot of people prefer them, they smoke them. A blast to catch, but for the table, i would trade them for whiting, trout, spanish mackeral. They seem to like fairly calm days in the surf, usually after the water has cleared a bit. Fishbites and/or shrimp - and sometimes you need a good rod that can really reach out there. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

| They are not super elusive. My wife and I catch them all year long. Usually small ones. But fall and winter is the time to target them. We were in them real thick one time and stopped when our cooler was full. Brought home probably a dozen or so. They are super fun to catch on real light tackle. I think they are better eating then Redfish or Black drum, But I agree that I like whiting better. Spanish Mackerel is my new favorite. When is the Mackerel window? |
