Figured I would try the surf again today being that the front was coming through and all next week I'll be up in Garland refereeing the State volleyball tournament. Water was about the same as it was the other day brown but not as rough. No weeds to speak of. I was able to cast up about a half a dozen mullet. Had one rod with shrimp and fish bites and other two rods with either live mullet or cut bait. All I wound up catching was two hard heads and over a dozen big gafftop. Also got a 38 in black tip. Also got this Ray and I don't know what kind it is. Can anybody identify it for me.

Awesome find! Reminds me of the old days at Carroll HS Marine Bio. Had a stargazer in a tank and would dare each other to reach in and grab it. Pretty good jolt...

Becky is spot on with the id. They are an 'occasional' find in the surf. More of a noctural hunter, so getting on in the day is a find. And they can deliver quite the shock. The old '9V to the tongue' ain't got nothing on this little guy.

My Buddy's son had the state record. Byron Noles Jr. Byron Sr grabbed it off the hook and it shocked the hell out of him. Naturally being a Flour Bluffian he was quite inquisitive and tried his luck touching it again! My oh my it can do multiple shocks without needing time to charge up again. He told me it was like grabbing the end of a spark plug wire with the engine running.

Man. Glad for the lesson online rather than at the surf. I wouldn't have known that at all. In 25 years fishing down PINS, never seen one of those. The round wings and markings were unrecognizable to me. But the tail and the point towards the head would've made me guess guitar fish, even though I know it doesn't quite look like them. When in doubt, use the handy beach shovel and put em back in the surf!
