Took out one of my reels that I haven't had the line off of in a long time. When I stripped line out it was coiled up real bad. What's the best way to straighten out fly line?[/u]

cast it.

Fly line coatings tend to be temperature-rated, coldwater and tropical, because the coating can get too tacky in the heat, and too hard in the cold.
The latter is what causes line coiling.
Newer lines are getting better with coatings that tolerate greater temperature change.

If your line is coiling, the tension of casting the line should straighten it out.

Might be time to upgrade and get a new intermediate sinking line, which cast better and fish better, because they're smaller diameter, you only need 5-6' leaders, and don't need a weighted fly.

That fly line on the reel that had sat for 51 years - was coiled pretty bad. I decided to just replace it, kind of like changing the oil every 3 months , 51 years from now, I will do that again !

Kidding aside - i am looking forward to getting out there with it - the one - almost cast - actually got a hit on the cast. I was on the edge of the first sandbar, fiddling with the very stiff flyline and probably got the fly out about 10 yards, it sank and as I started the retrieve - darn if i didnt get a hit on it. So I am one for one - on hits per semi-successful casts.
