Long time reader here. First post.

Reading about Tyler's new rig brought up the issue: rust from the 7-10 trips down to PINS each year. Any thoughts on prevention? Treatment? I typically just spray out the undercarriage after each trip, usually starting with the coin operated ones just over the causeway.

FYI, I've got a 4x4 pickup, 4"lift, 35" tires-- and I rarely run close to the surf. I usually stay in the ruts.

Interested in any thoughts/comments/suggestions.

Hungerbuster (your name is making me want to go to Dairy Queen),

I'm sure you'll get plenty of hits here on rust prevention. Here's the first tip:

When you wash your truck, put the tailgate down and rinse out the seam. I never did this, and now the bottom of my tailgate is super-rusted. I'll need a new one eventually.

Get an undercoating from ziebart i think.
You wont have to worry about rust.

I think it was "Rust Never Sleeps".My experience has seen many beach vehicles come and go.You can't stop it but you can try to slow it down.Rustproofing and constant maintenance.Newer trucks have such thin metal. The oiling of the undercarriage and running down a caliche road is about the best method I've heard about. The oil will actually soak into the metal the caliche dust helps form a barrier.

In my opinion I think it is a waste of money to under coat a used truck especially one that is a few years old. No telling what the previous owners cleaning habits were and all that road grime, salts and dirt just pile up over the years. Then when you get it under coated most likely that stuff gets covered up by the coating and starts to eat away your ride. I have never ever had one of my beach trucks under coated and had them last several years. All you need to do is wash the underside real good after each trip and when you do see some rust start to form take care of it then.

Once you see it starting to rust its to late, it starts from the inside in. By that time its already set in.

I use this stuff called Rust Bullet on my boat trailer rust spots and repairs I had made......it's a little pricey, but I did it last year and it's holding up pretty good. I think the internet is the only place to get it, no I don't sell the stuff, but it's pretty good on rust. I think it only comes in silver and black.
