Matthew finally came home after a year at 29 Palms, California. He hopes to never be assigned to that base again with its 115 degree daily Summer temps and lack of any kind of fishing, and in one short week he will fly to Okinawa for his next two year assignment. I am making the most of our time together and teaching him everything I can about fishing offshore, so he can begin to explore his new surroundings on the weekends.
Yesterday we headed way down PINS to some structure that holds uncountable numbers of kingfish. Matthew caught his first king trolling on the way out, a fat 49 incher. His second fish was a massive 55 inch beast. He switched to jigging near the bottom for other species, and caught a bunch of other species.

This morning we headed out to the rigs near the Mayan Princess on Mustang Island.

The kings were small but thick. He landed his limit quickly, then went back to different styles of jigging that may prove useful in the Pacific. He is a quick study, and is well on his way to being a self-sufficient offshore kayaker. I'm not looking forward to his leaving again, but I'm proud of his service to country and independent nature. The Marine Corps says they forge men. After boot camp he told me that being forged is pretty uncomfortable but not the worst thing in the world. He's not a kid anymore, but he sure makes his old dad proud!

I'm pretty sure his better fish is better than your best, but never let him know that

Until this year my best mark was 54.25". I caught several fish of that length, but this year I moved up to 57.5" twice, so he may not beat me until his third trip out, lol.

Thanks for the kind thoughts, and I'll relay them to him.

He will love Okinawa. Went there aboard ship several times. Hopefully he likes Japanese food and learns to speak at least a little Japanese. I learned about sushi there.

As with any foreign country, the people do not dislike Americans, they just really like Okinawans. Learn to speak some Japanese and the locals will open up to you.

Thanks guys, he is trying to learn as many forms of jigging and trolling as possible in a week. It is an enjoyable assignment.
