The staff at PINS (PAIS to the Park Service folks) has the dog now, and wrote the email below. Email me and I can send pictures (I am picture posting challenged)
Do you have a Padre dog?
It's tradition in the park service to have a dog that was left behind and abandoned in the park. Not only do many of the staff here at PAIS have abandoned beach dogs, but NPS employees all over the nation have dogs found in the parks.
Now is your chance to have your very own park dog.
This sweet dog was found at the 5 mm on South Beach. We talked to the owner, and he essentially abandoned him and claimed he could live with the coyotes.
He is 5 years old. He is most likely a heeler or cattledog/pit mix. He is very submissive and sweet. He's lived outside in a run, so he doesn't know any commands and doesn't answer to his name. He weighs 50 lbs, but should probably be a little smaller than that. He goes into a kennel without any resistance, so he would be a fine crated dog. Personality-wise he's very sweet and is clingy - always wants to be where you are. The owner says he's good with children - which I would guess is true, considering his docile nature. My dogs didn't even phase him, so he does well with other dogs, too.
He has an eye wound that should heal (we have meds for it) but he'll probably always have a pretty big scar around his eye. We got the history of that wound from the owner: he's had the wound for almost a year but the owner didn't regularly use the ointment or do anything to heal him up. The dog is heartworm positive. Mike and I will get him going on the heartworm treatment. Having heartworms means he can't be too energetic for the couple months of treatment, so he'll be chill for a while....he's pretty chill as it is.
I've attached some pictures. If you or someone you know is interested, please let me know. I cannot keep him, but can foster him until we find him a home. PLEASE find him a home. He's so sweet, despite his rough first several years.
Pictures are attached to this email. |

Sounds like a cool dog but I can't take him. It's just room enough for me and the cat in my apartment.
I agree with the above sentiments as well, but what's even more heartbreaking is how common this actually is according to the rangers. Unfortunately, it's fairly common where I work as well. There should be a requirement to take a pet responsibility course before ever owning one. But I don't have a clue how to enforce that.
Bottom line, don't get a pet if you're less than 100% sure it's something you can handle. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |
