First, let me start with a Thank You to all that contribute to this forum. I have been reading the posts (for years) and soaking up all the information I can.
I am 54 and have been going to PINS for as long as I can remember, in fact, PINS is where I learned how to swim. My wife has done the same when she was a little girl she spent the summer with her aunt.
Fishing PINS has always been a challenge for me and still is but I'm getting better. We went down this week for a few days, set out long rods and waded with lures and live bait. Live bait produced nothing but hardheads. Lures now was a little different. I had plenty of fish hooked up on 3/4 spoons (kastmasters silver) but I could not land them some were trout and others I had no clue. I would either get cut off or the fish would just pull off. It was a blast just hooking up I was on a catch and release trip. The long rod had one run I never got the hook in.
We visited some of the restaurants recommended on this forum and were very impressed. Padre Island Burger Company is the best burger we have had.
For our next trip, I would like to make the trip all the way to the jetties. This trip we made the 30-mile marker (this is where I caught (hooked) most of the fish). My wife is a nervous making this trip without cell service. What radio would be best for this venture? I have a CB in the Jeep but limited range, I thought my handheld marine radio or maybe a HAM radio. I know an SAT phone would be best but pricey. How far is to the jetties?
Again Thanks to everyone. (sorry for the long post) |

You can get cell service when you get to the jetty. Walk up on the jetty towards the dune line and there is a small spot where you can get a good signal.
I have a CB and have always been comfortable with the even with limited range |

Hey, thanks for the report. A couple of things I can answer while others more qualified than I can chime in.
One, if you look at some of the other posts on here lately you will notice them talking about a cold water upwelling. Did you notice the water was unusually cold while out there? If so, this can make fishing extremely challenging. So that could be part of the poor fishing/lots of hard heads you saw.
The fish you kept getting bites on with artificiala could almost be anything but I |

A ham radio with a proper antenna will work, but please remember to legally transmit using ham radio frequencies you must be licensed. You didn't indicate where your home is. If I knew that I could provide you directions to the closest ham radio club to you. The club should be happy to help you get licensed. Once licensed there are several brands of handheld 2 meter band radios available for under $50.00. _________________ Gary J

Regarding cell service, just about anywhere along pins, hike up the highest dune you can find, and you will get at least service enough to text.
Regarding the upswelling - on wednesday, the 4th, we were at 58 or 59 - my big bad usmc daughter was too much a wuss to cross the first gut, it was close to 6 foot deep right before the sand bar. The water was beautiful and clear - and though we didnt get any runs, I saw a shark in close.
Went back on Friday , the 7th, only went to 40's and the water while cooler than you expect for july, was not as cool as it was at the 58 two days earlier. And in the mid 40s , the water was maybe a 2 or 3 out of 10. Later in the day when we started heading back , we noticed the water had certainly cleared a lot , maybe 6 / 10 , this was around the 25, we stopped to talk to some friends. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

Foldcat I'm located in Friendswood, TX. I have been looking at Ham radios for a while now.
I'm good without a cell signal or even a radio for the most part. My wife has a hard time not being in constant contact with our youngest daughter. She needs updates on the grandbaby. Seriously I understand she's concerned if something happens in a such a remote place she wants to tell baby girl.
The funny part is today we made a trip to Galveston and the right front brake caliper locked up on the Jeep. I was able to get back working but this is one of the situations she's concerned about. |

I forgot to post my wife did catch a 20" red off the "T" Heads the first night there. She had a blast that red put up a great fight.
We both used to fish off the "T" heads when we were kids. |

I learned last year when it comes to lures look at the barb on the hook.
One night a friend and I were at bob hall and he was bringing them in and I was hooking up but loosing everything. I got to looking at my hooks and his, my barbs were so small they couldn't have kept a mosquito on. I changed the hooks on the lures and that solved them getting off.
