I was stung many years ago by man of war - the tentacle left a welt on my foot - it stung. I remember comparing it to a yellow jacket - got your attention, and hurt, but not awful.

Tonight , I was standing in ankle deep water, tending my lines, when I felt an awful - almost electrical shot of pain up my leg. I thought I had been hit by a sting ray - no puncture - i looked around for a man of war, or other jelly fish, nothing - i saw a reddish area on my ankle - and looked closer. There was a strand - that went around my ankle and the pain was coming from there. This strand was light colored and had evenly spaced bead looking things on it - the strand was about the size of thread, and the 'beads' much less than the size of a b-b. The pain was terrific - I loaded up my gear - noticed that I had left the first aid kit at home (which had vinegar wipes and vinegar bottle it it) . Wrong. I stopped a ranger who said, "you need to get help now - can you drive" and I could - their first aid offices were all closed by then. I was going to Physicians Premier Er (my brother's business) when I remembered that vinegar would neutralize jelly fish poison, and I stopped at several places, until I got to HEB where I got some and poured it on the affected area. The pain started backing off pretty quick. Though it still is pretty painful, it has lessened, - am considering heading over to the Physicians Premier er over - if it gets worse. There was no welt on it - so I dont think it was a man of war, I think it was some other jelly fish - which was harder to see. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be the culprit here ? I dont think man of war, but I do think some kind of jelly fish.

I always heard peeing on a jellyfish sting would ease the pain. however it's bad when you get stung on the face and your buddy has to administer medical help. As for the jellyfish I think they all sting except for the cannon ball/ cabbagehead I have never been stung by one of them.

Donnie,
My brother and I got hit by box jellyfish at the North Jetty about 30 years ago.
Those are the most painful jellyfish I have encountered.
I cannot tell you about color. I have color acuity issues.

Donnie. Sorry about the encounter. Not an awful lot to go on by the description, but this time of year it could have easily been a sea nettle, in the genus Chrysaora. (Or just a stray man-o-war tentacle, too). Both have tentacles are long and frilly, and easily detach. For their size, nettles pack a wallop and will certainly get your attention. Their sting is rated from "moderate" to "severe" , [although that's like chili pepper ratings.... Who is the skifoozo that willingly takes a sting to rate them????]

Thanks CS, building up my first aid kit, I had read up on jellyfish/man of war/etc. stings figuring that was most likely mishap out there, and ruled out the peeing on my self protocol. THe vinegar made a difference - though the pain stayed through the night and is still there - though on a low (2/10) level this morning, well in the most interesting part of the eveing was popping 7/8 out of 10. Going to read up on your notes, thank you very much, specially the nettle - i have had man of war, and helped many others over the years with those and this wasnt man of war, no welt, etc. And a heck of a lesson, throw wife out of the car to make room for the first aid kit (this is a small piece of luggage ) with stuff for water purification, to vinegar bottle, vinegar wipes, bandages, etc etc.

Found some fairly decent pictures of the box jellyfish and their tentacles and that I believe is what i found around my ankle. Good thing it wasnt their australian cousins.

Donnie sounds like quite an encounter. Sorry you got zapped so bad. I usually carry meat tenderizer as I've always heard that the poisons from the jellyfish are made up of protein and that the meat tenderizer breaks down protein. I could be wrong but I carry it anyway. Makes it into a paste and apply it. I've never got hit as hard as you did but hope I never do

If away from your first aid kit just rub some beach mud on it. That seems to stop the sting somewhat until you can get a better remedy.

When I was young and dumb me and some buddies were at the beach in PA and a man-of-war came floating by in the surf and I was gonna be a smart arse and smack him with a tennis racket. Water splashed back in my face and I guess a piece of the tentacle landed on my upper eyelid. I thought, I will just put ice on it I dont recommend doing that.

It would have been better to get your buddy

That is exactly what I thought of IMS when I read your post, glad I didn't know about the pee thing back then, If my buddies would have known that they probably would have tried to talk me into it, just for future funny stories.

Finger nail polish remover. Acetone I think is what it is, will cure it quick. It's temporary but pain should subside in 15 minutes or so. Some people react to it differently than others. Don't rub it!! Jeff Wolda
