I think I have everything covered. I still need to pickup the tow strap.
I traded the truck in yesterday and now have a 4x4 BUT since I just got it
2016 with only 4000 miles, I'll either stay around Packery, NBH, or hopefully PINS but not to far in. I wont be able to get there until tomorrow mid morning.
Dont want to go to far until I know its good, but driving down from Hondo should help.
Question...Is it advisable to bring one of the hand held marine radios? Will they work? Will anyone answer that can help?
The thing that worries me most is going to sleep only to find the tide came way to far up.
You said park close to the dunes, Isnt that soft sand ie getting stuck. I have looked at pins a lot on google maps and see some of the cuts that go back that I could gain some distance with if they are not taken or too far down. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. Congrats on the truck! I'm looking to upgrade myself in a few months. You can take a marine radio if you like; I believe the Coast Guard is always monitoring those frequencies anyway (don't know if they'll pick you up from flat island though - maybe try climbing to the top of the highest nearby dune). You can also take a CB with a magnetic mount antenna; It's old school but I know some people still run them, and MAY be able to raise Park Rangers in an emergency. Turtle Patrol is out in full force right now too, should be easy flagging one of them down. Even saw a Navy Blackhawk doing a fly-over, so there's usually help around.
I was just down there yesterday (PINS) and while I only went to the 10.5, the beach at high tide was still wide enough for campers to park near the dune line and cars to pass. At low tide there's plenty of space. I think we've seen all the effects of Alberto that we're gonna get at this point.
Also, up near the dunes it is slightly softer but it's not thick. 2x4 have no problem parking there right now. I think you'll be alright. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

In the snow we used to carry an 8 ft long by 4 foot wide piece of "no climb" horse fence. The problem with just putting something under one wheel is that when it turns it shoots out the back. If you have a section of wire that spans both wheels the wheel that doesn't spin holds the wire in place and driving off is easy. A good idea might be to put the wire on the sand when you park for the night. Back your rear tires onto the wire and your truck can't settle. You then have 4 feet worth of no slip acceleration to get going out of the soft sand. _________________ Gary J

Though not absolutely necessary, airing your tires down to about 20-25 PSI for the sand can make life a lot easier in the softer stuff. Just don't forget to air back up for the asphalt. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman

Stole that one from the aviation world. They use much larger versions to lift the wings when landing gear gets buried in mud (i.e. running off the runway). _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

Regardless of who thought it up it works and is quick - something that could be of value when stuck and water is rising. _________________ Gary J

Sorry for the delay I know its not Tuesday but here it goes.
We went down last Saturday. Went 10 miles (odometer) down. Didnt see but 1 or 2 markers going down though not sure why we didnt see them.
Anyway caught about 5 whiting, 3 big ones and wife caught a lot of her twins...you know those things we call hardheads......
Man it was windy, Around 6 or so, started to set the tent up and it was so windy after about 10 minutes said to heck with it and packed up and headed inland looking for a place. Gave up and headed home about 10:30.
Going back either 9th or 16th maybe.
I wonder since We were there at low tide what kind of space between water and dunes will be especially since the water level was supposed to have been low last weekend any way?
Does it get so close you have leave or that others just cant get by?
Even though the surf was rough the water up to my knees seemed to be clear I could see my feet. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

One thing you can always do that's pretty trusty is look at the weedline. The surf at high tide pushes all (most) seaweed, trash, etc, etc up to a certain point along the beach then leaves it there as the tide falls back down. Park/camp/set-up should always take place above that line. From this weedline down to the surf the sand is typically packed (as it was recently wet). It's safe to drive on, but obviously not safe to set up on. |

I think its ironical that the part that is safe to drive on is not safe to camp on so we drive into the unsafe area to set up camp.
Thus the reason for 4x4, I guess. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |
