I've really been considering taking the trip out to San Jose Island since I moved here (coming up on a year now), but since it's only accessible by the Jetty boat, I have some questions for any of you that have answers.
Of course, my intention is to fish either the jetty or the surf, or both - but how do you haul all that gear? I will most likely be alone as well so no extra helping hands. I don't have all that much I want to take - 2 or 3 rods, a bucket, my tackle box, small (handheld) ice chest, my "survival kit" (which is just a soft lunch bag with sunblock, ziplock bags, bug spray, and some first aid stuff - which can fit IN the ice chest), bait, rod stakes, and possibly my cast net. But it's not like I can do on Padre or Mustang and just throw it all in the back of the truck. How do you get from the parking lot to San Jose on foot with all of that?
To add to that, is camping overnight allowed? Would anyone recommend it? I've camped miles down on South Beach @ PINS several times and that was primitive but I LOVED it. But being on a completely isolated island with no vehicle? Plus, what about all the extra gear you have to carry in addition to the fishing equipment mentioned above?
I assume I should probably just take a day trip there for my first time, but still, I don't want to waste a trip and go without any fishing gear. Is there maybe a certain way to experience it and "dip my toes in the water" first with a really light load out?
Just curious. Maybe I should just focus on getting a boat or kayak...I've got questions on those, too (LOL). But local expertise always helps with these things. I love reading this forum, so much useful info! Thanks. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

Do a search for posts by Frederick Dunphey. He fishes the Port A North Jetty.
You will see jetty/pier carts.... _________________

Fish Mate carts are great you can also rent a cart from Fisherman's Wharf where you catch the jetty boat. Tight Lines

I'm one of those "pack light" people, all my gear can fit into a bucket and I take two rods. Then again, I'm not one of those all day marathon fishing guys. 4 hours is good.
The wife carries a lawn chair for her but that's about it. |

I've seen the carts and have considered getting one for the piers. How well do they work going on the Jetty Boat, the docks, etc? _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

I would love to be that light but I want an ice chest in case I catch keepers, and also one of those guys that likes to have most of his tackle with him for quick changes. I guess I could get one of those travel tackle things but I am almost sure I'll forget something I want out there and then get mad at myself. _________________ All things will pass. I have a backpack with four rodholders on it for bigger trips, but I generally just take one or two rods and my tackle/hydration pack.
In order of importance:
1 Sunscreen
2 Water
3 Be aware of return trip times. (I always miss the noon return by 15 minutes and end up getting burned because of it. )
4South of SE wind: (The Jetty has to block the wind for the magic to happen over there). This might be better at #1.
There will be 4 times as many people on Saturday morning as on Sunday morning.
Just go.

| I seem to recall that you can rent jetty carts at some of the local bait shops. If you don't go very often, that would probably be the best option. |

I second the backpack notion. I have several, each for different fishing conditions. Academy has a few under their H2O Express house brand tailored for fishing with a large compartment containing several clear plastic tackle boxes.
Recently, I was in the market for a replacement bag to house my freshwater/catfishing gear. I decided on a Condor brand military/bug out bag. It was pricey but it has several large compartments for big flat plastic tackle boxes and dip/dough bait containers plus many smaller zipped and mesh pockets. AND, if that's not enough, the bag has a M.O.L.L.E. attachment system for adding extra smaller packs if I should need them. As for rods, I use a couple of long straps with plastic D rings on one end and Velcro on the other. I just bundle the rods together, lash one end around the upper portion of the rods and the other is wrapped and secured near the reels. Then I through the loop over my neck and carry them bandolier style. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman
