My dad gave me a rig about 25 years ago that he used to use.
The rig is now about 50 years old.
The reel is an old Penn 309. Its still in able shape.
The rod is the question. It has a roller tip and I put new ceramic eyes on it 20 years ago.
My concern is the actual pole. It looks ok, yellowed with age. I remember he caught a 52" big ugly on it when I was a kid. Will age cause a fiberglass rod to break under a load? I have another penn just like only about 20 years old and new pole. I just dont want to take this one out and tie into something big and have it shatter, or snap.
What say you?

I always thought the only enemy fiberglass had was the sun, I have several solid fiberglass pier rods with Penns I inherited from my grandfather, they all date from the late 60's.

That reminds me, i need to redo the cork on a couple of them.

the only thing that will destroy the resin on your glass rod is UV exposure - long term storage in the sun - and that holds true for graphite, as well.
The advantage of glass over graphite is it's tougher, and less likely to break under load.
Even heat - takes 175 degrees to Begin decomposing the resin.

I bought a Berkley rod in the 1960's still catching 30lb drum on it.

I've got a 7.5 foot Sabre rod from California that my dad bought at Kmart in 1970. It's similar to a Harnell.

Most of my tackle is from the 60's
-re-wrap the pole for fun
-take the reel apart to learn how it works, lube (should have all metal gears)
-Pink Ande Line
-make your own leaders
-catch your own bait
-wade out and lob your bait
-cut your own PVC pole holders
- pour your own cocktail and wait for a screaming run
