Hi CCF,
I'm new to the board as I have recently moved from Houston to Corpus. We've done a bit of fishing but my wife has expressed interest in collecting live oysters and/or clams for dinner. I'm aware of TX-33 on the DSHS website, but I was hoping someone could share some specific areas they would recommend we try?
Thanks! |

I don't know of any clams to harvest though we see big Quahog shells on PINS. I have seen a live one down there once or twice. I forget but there used to be places in Shamrock that were open for oysters. I will have to check the regs as they close if any red tide or bacteria issues occur in the places to harvest.
The little Coquina clams are edible but you'd have to eat a bunch to make a meal out of them and I have heard they are pretty sandy as well.

Thanks Tyler for the info. I'm currently working out in the GOM and expect to be back on the 19th of this month so any info you could come up with would sure be appreciated. We are planning a late day to night or late night to early day trip to PINS once I get home to do some surf fishing and I can't wait. When I was checking out the TX-33 and TX-34 maps it appeared that all the areas bayside of mustang island were good to go, only closed areas were along the shore with the city.

I think just about all the oysters are in Nueces and Copano really. There is an end the Oyster season. You may find a rare one sticking up hear or there where a little fresh water can flow in from the island but there isn't a lot that's for sure. Certainly the walks would not be as long in Nueces or Copano. And truthfully, anywhere where an oyster might grow on the island is going to be one deep sticky muddy marsh hole. Maybe the others might know somewhere but none are coming to mind for me.
Season is only Thru April 30. Mon - Sat Sunrise to 3:30...

On both sides of of the Island Road, just past the Zahn Road entrance, are HUGE areas of intratidal oyster beds, but I don't know that I would partake. The backside (Island Side) of CC Bay has a number of spots that oysters can be found (think around Shamrock), that I have eaten when I was a much younger man. The northern part of CC Bay around La Quinta Channel and Berry Island also has some remaining beds.... But, I'd just run down to reputable dealer and buy a sack, if I was in a pinch. |

| Many years ago we were wading back around deadmans somewhere, tide was low, and these big clams were sticking out of the mud everywhere. Hmm... we'll just have us a bunch of fresh fried clams. Didn't work out that way. But we learned where 'hackie sacks' came from. |
