I just got the OK for a new reel since I had some of my larger shark fishing stuff stolen last year. I've had AVET reels and I love them, but for the price of one 50w I could have 2 PENN Squall 50vsw. The question is 1 AVET or 2 PENN...

What are yalls thoughts?

I've become a Tica fan over the last 5 years. Not fishing anything that size, but I've caught Big specs on their diminutive Cetus UL (this is the reel I've fished for 5 years in the salt), fished a Libra through the fall, and added a Caiman baitcaster to fish in the spring.
Tica USA sells on Amazon, and they're easy to contact about parts and service (all I've bought are spare spools).

That said, I've fished my Penns 35 years.

I like the idea of getting 2. Does anyone have experience with both? I just don't want to regret the penn reels that's all.

Quantity over quality, at least that is what we say when it comes to beer!

I have a couple Penn Squalls and haven't had any issues and like them better than some others I have had. I don't have any experience with the Avet's so I can't give a comparison. The Avet's are just a little to pricey for me.

I'll be the odd man out lol. I have caught several solid fish with the squall 50vsw but when trying to crank, it can get a little shifty when its in a bind. The avets don't have that play and if you go to sell the avet later you will get just about what you paid. I lost my arse when I sold my squall.

That's what i was looking for. Like I said I've had AVET and loved them. This discussion wouldn't even be happening if my stuff wasnt stolen. It would be hands down AVET all the way. I'm guessing it's a get what you pay for type deal with the squall? Just trying to build up my gear again.

Have you looked at the Makairas?
Lots of drag and very smooth.
Very nice reels and some of the online sellers have line offers with purchase.
Line alone can be a big expense on those larger reels as you know.
Factory service is supposed to be very good, but I've never had any problems with mine, a 10, a 16 and a 20. The 20 is size of others 30's.

Yes I have looked at them. I've only held the 80w and man it was a beast. They are nice though. They are similarly priced with avet. Which 50w will spark an entire different discussion. How do you feel it compares to AVET

I've got both, and the squall has its positive's such as a very loud clicker, and on the light side; but even so I won't run my big baits on it. I would only trust it for up to 8', but then again that's most of the sharks caught in the surf so it will handle 95% of any hookup; but if your looking for that "big" one then go with Avet.

Penn's may not be as smooth as Avet, but remember, they tend to last forever. From a value perspective Penn is probably the best value on the market today.

No spool binding at higher drag for one thing.
Personal experience with Avet is limited to SX and HX.

Just a little food for thought... Look for a used Penn 50 Wide Two Speed on BloodyDecks. I was able to find a 30 and a 20 two Speed all done by Cal Sheets for $400 for both.
There has been a lot of 50 on there with people getting rid of them because there actually to big for the fishing their doing now.
Saw a 50 wide 2 Speed on there last weeks ago for $300.
Just a thought...
