With the long weekend ahead I was thinking of heading down on Sat morning and spending a couple nights on the beach. Weather Channel shows temps to be Ok with small chances of rain.

I can deal with the weather my question is what will the fishing be like? Is there anything biting right now?

I hate to throw cold water on your trip but surf fishing has been very slow the last two days. IMO due to cold water. Water temperature dropped to 51 with last front. Today temperature was 53 but still very slow. The recent north winds have the current ripping to the south.
I will be back on the sand next two days and if bite improves I will certainly post that update. I have noticed fishermen on the north packery jetty setting up lights for night fishing but have no information on their success.

Of my last 5 trips , 4 were skunks, including going all the way to mansfield. The 5th and last trip was to bob hall - on super bowl sunday and while it took a while to get used to bhp again, i keep moving toward deeper water until i did catch some keeper whiting - and of course a sting ray.

I also lost something that picked up my bait - and went under the pier - he never knew I was even there, never slowed down, never sped up , just headed north and cut my line , scraped on barnacles is what my line looked like. So that was encouraging. But 5 keeper whiting - for 5 hours on bhp, so - I guess at least I didnt get all wet, trying to think of positive stuff to say, but I go with the guys that posted earlier - might not be a bad time to clean gear, reline reels , etcl.

I drove out today at lunch to see what it looked like - and pretty much looks like it has for the last 6 weeks.

And this poor seagull has a leader, with two small weights attached to his beak. But the water , looks 3/10 to me, and the wind with the weather in the next week, i dont think is going to clear up the water much this week. If I go down pins, I will head for mansfield in hopes of clearer water. That doesn seem likely for other reasons, but if I start getting the shakes and have to fish , it will be BHP.

Edited to add: I did see on Fishing 361 - that some guy, his name is Rome I think caught some nice reds, i think he was around packery channel, in the surf around packery, based on what I could see in his pictures.

Sure seams like you are spending more time down on the sand.

If you are able to, you should book a trip with Capt. Jeff Wolda at 215-8400.

This guy can teach you more in one day of chasing fish in the surf than you will learn in years on your own. Money well spent if surf fishing is your gig.

Thanks for the kind words Hillcountry. This winter started off well but, it has been really tough the last 3 weeks. Mother Nature rules the world of surf fishing and she's turned it off for now. Keep your finger crossed these cold fronts start easing up. Jacks can start to show around the 2nd weekend of March if things work out weather wise. Y'all make sure you show up to the Big Shell Cleanup on Feb. 24th!!! Jeff Wolda
