so, the NMFS has stepped it's game up, despite being "trumped" by the Sec. of Commerce last year, and is acting like a scorned teenager by turning up the heat in a desperate move to keep their control over the red snapper situation, which they have clearly lost...we need to keep up the heat ourselves and not stand being treated like we are, which is being fed a spoon full of crap and expected to smile....

here's the latest, the "Texas Management for Recreational Red Snapper" draft amendment, which I got my hot little hands on an advance copy (PM me your email and I'll send you a copy)....my blood boiled more and more with every page I read....it basically doesn't offer any solutions, and actually proposes that Texas give up their state water season permanently...if our leadership goes for this, get out the pitchforks...

they FINALLY came out and said what they're thinking in a simple language, that everyone can easily understand...and I quote:

"In the event red snapper landings exceed the gulf-wide recreational ACL while red snapper is classified as overfished, the amount of overage would be deducted from the recreational ACL. This would occur whether or not Texas was successful in constraining landings to below it's ACL, but would result in a decrease to Texas' ACL, because Texas' ACL would be based on a percentage of the Gulf-wide ACL."

ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME??!!!! this is EXACTLY what's going on now! they are punishing Texas for the greedy bastiges on the other side of the gulf...and they're not hiding that fact!!! scorned teenager wants it all!

here! just in case you didn't catch their meaning, they iterate it in the following sentence in a different manner....

"For example, if the recreational ACL is greatly exceeded, then the necessary overage adjustment may reduce fishing opportunities under Texas' ACL the following year, even if Texas had not exceeded it's portion of the recreational ACL."

SERIOUSLY??!!! who in their right mind would accept this piece of garbage deal??

I vote we secede from the entire NMFS and GC process based on the brazen disregard for any sanity in red snapper fishery management...it is right there in black and white that the eastern gulf is basically stealing our quota because we have more snapper over here, and they can't help themselves....punishing us for having more red snapper on this side...

UGH!!!

thanks to an undisclosed friend for the link to the full amendment...

http://gulfcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/B-6e5-Texas-State-Management-1-8-2018.pdf

in addition, folks from LA, MS, AL, and FL are currently reviewing their draft amendments...I'm betting they're equally as thrilled...

I wonder how FL's reads? hmmm....

I was referencing the attempt to get Texas to give up its season. Who in Texas would control that decision?

I think someone needs to "lead the charge".

Maybe a challenger to Blake Farenthold's position could step up, get some name recognition, and some votes.

Otherwise, our Attorney General in Texas, Ken Paxon, needs some positive press, if he opens his eyes to see this as an issue.

With Donald Trump and Wiillbburrr Ross running the federal side, maybe we need to get George Strait and Nolan Ryan to help.

Here is the guy within NMFS who is over our area:

Roy E. Crabtree, Ph.D.
Regional Administrator, Southeast Region

Dr. Crabtree has served as Regional Administrator for the Southeast Region since 2003. Previously he served as a senior research scientist at the Florida Marine Research Institute. His managerial experience includes operating his own fishing guide business in the Florida Keys and Everglades National Park, serving as a Fishery Management Specialist with NOAA Fisheries' Southeast Region, and, most recently, serving as Director of the Division of Marine Fisheries with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. With more than 15 years of state and federal service, Dr. Crabtree has gathered broad experience as a natural resource manager. He has authored or co-authored 36 scientific publications and six selected unpublished assessments, and has provided input on numerous fisheries management plans for the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and Caribbean. He earned his Ph.D. in Marine Science from the College of William and Mary, an M.S. degree in marine science from the University of South Carolina, and a B.S. degree in Biology from Furman University

All this fire and fury may be a moot point.

Didn't hear it from me, but there is a movement afoot to change the designation of THE red snapper to 'no longer overfished' [it's a legislative sleight-of-hand that takes some creative liberties with Mag-Stevens], and as such, the overage penalties for exceeding ACLs evaporate into thin air, 'so long as THE red snapper is still on a rebuilding plan horizon that is not changed'.

Shhhhhh.... While I slink back into the shadows.

[And I have it on good authority that TX will NOT give up state water seasons despite any action the Feds take. Our overall landings simply don't compare to other 'areas', and as told to me, "It Ain't Gonna Happen"].

some bluff rat spoke up at the last snapper meetings and said something about not trusting the feds at all, and getting in bed with them under the guise of a partnership in order to get a few more days of snapper fishing, while letting them get their hooks into our state fishery was a bad idea...

who was that...

well, to me, the logical way that would happen is that they would have to 1) move either their rebuilding target date, or 2) actually change the MRIP data, or 3)"revise" their estimates for total stock....

what are they sliding on? certainly not admitting fault with the data set...I'd guess moving the rebuilding date...

good to hear our fearless leaders haven't been rattled and will continue to hold firm on our state water season...
