Yesterday Mary and I decided again to go out and get some exercise as well as do some fishing. Here she is at the start of our hike working her way up the side of a Mesa

After about a mile and a half into our hike we found an area had some pretty views so we sat down, ate a protein bar had some water and took pics. At this point somebody decided that they wanted to turn around and go back because they wanted to fish.

The lake in the background is Abiquiu Lake and I was going to go and fish down below the lake where the Chama River flows from. Last week the river was flowing at over 900 CFS and reports had today it was only 99. I thought that finding some deep holes in the low river would be ideal for finding trout. When we got to the river there were a lot of fishermen there mainly guides with their clients. I was able to find some areas to fish and was pretty successful.

Here I am nymph fishing watching my indicator float Downstream. I was using an awesome fly rod that was given to me by dmac.

Here my line starts tightening as a fish started taking my fly. I'm just getting ready to set my hook.

Here's the 13 inch trout that took my red bead head nymph

The fish stopped biting on flies I guess they had too much offering of those. I switched over to spinner baits and picked up another three trout. All in all I wound up catching and releasing 7 rainbows on the day

Once again awesome scenery Tom, looks like out of the movies. And glad you're getting some enjoyment out of that rod, it's an oldy for sure.

Next time, try using your beadhead for an attractor, and fish a thread midge dropper (brassie, etc.).
Slide your beadhead up the leader, and tie on an 18" piece of tippet - let the beadhead bump-stop on the knot.
Fish a size 22 or 24 dropper.

Usually, you'll split fish between the attractor and the dropper.
The San Juan rig, you do the same thing with a carpet strike indicator.
Slide up a Griffith's gnat, about 6" from the indicator tie on 3' tippet, slide up your bead-head, and tie on your 18" dropper. With this rig, you'll usually split fish between all three flies.
Simpler, just fish an elkhair caddis dry with an 18" thread midge dropper.

Hey Bulldog yesterday I did have a my red bead head as a stimulator and a black gnat down below it. Caught most on the red nymph. In the Rio Grande they wanted bigger bugs. I had a Wooly bugger with a San Juan worm dropper. Depending on the hatch I also will use a dry as my indicator with a dropper blow it.

years ago I tied up a very accurate mosquito larvae that tore them up everywhere from San Juan to Conejos on a late October trip.
The prevailing wisdom is after September, midges are the only thing hatching, but that doesn't necessarily affect what will turn them.
Dave's red squirrel in 16 is also a great attractor fly.
