Last night my son (still waiting for the green light to head for boot camp) wanted to go fishing. I work during the week, but we went anyway. Paddled a mile to the CPL spillway, hoping a few trout were still holed up there after the front. My son told me he just wanted to fish on bottom for whatever he could catch, and I helped him get set up. I went in search of trout, quickly realized they weren't around in numbers, and went back to join my boy. We parked the kayaks on the side of the channel and used fishbites to catch fat croaker after fat croaker, up to 14.5 inches.
I am at a very different stage of fishing than he is, but this was a great time when we could talk, teach and learn the finer points of bait soaking, and enjoy the quiet night and each others company. We got home before midnight and had a great time doing something we both enjoyed. Yep, whether offshore chasing the highly sought-after species or fishing the bottom for fish others just consider bait, this was what fishing should be. I hope when he gets out of the military that we can team up again for some more muddy, slimy quality time!

awesome! yeah, the Oso bridges, Cole Park, the ICWW, and Port A used to be elbow-to-elbow in the fall with folks filling coolers with golden croaker, back in the day....nice stringer, and good on you for hanging with your boy!

Good job Dad! Good luck to your son!
Those are big croakers, I haven't seen any like that in a long time! |

I can relate, Professor. My oldest son is in his early 30's. He caught his 1st fish before he could talk very well. We fish both fresh and salt. We work as a team, when launching the boat, tying up to a rig offshore, rigging baits for guests, etc. I really enjoy our trips together. Please tell your son thanks for his upcoming service to our country!! _________________ dunedawg |
