Hey guys, back in the old days, to get cell service at PINS , I would go climb the highest dune and get service, now most of the time, that was pretty shallow on PINS, like 2 or 3 miles down, thats where me and my kids would camp. What kind of cell service is available down PINS, like 20-30 miles down or more. While scooting up a dune isnt available anymore to me, has anyone tried that? Other question, regarding water depth close to shore - isnt it true that the farther down, the water gets considerable deeper, close to shore. Isnt the water depth on the 1st gut much deeper when you get down 25 miles than it is at bhp or at the sticks.

Thanks

I lose service in spots on park rd 22. Typically I fish from the 40mm down to the Mansfield Jetty and I have to get up on the dunes to get reception.

Good to hear. FYI, if any of you are down that way, and you see what looks like a beached whale with a cane flopping around on a dune, call a cherry picker for me, please dont harpoon me. I know some evening , I am going to be out there and decide I want to stay overnight, and I want to be able to call and let me wife know, so thats what I will do. My problem is i am one of those 'help Ive fallen and I cant get up' people. I am working on learning how to get up, but havent master it yet. In rehab, you are taught to 'transition' (move from bed to wheelchair), (bed to walker), etc. etc. but getting up when you have fallen in the surf, is not in the lesson plan at rehab. If you come by my camp and you see more rod holders with out rigs , they are in place to help me if I fall. My family is not that wild about me going by my self, but - I have to fish.

Donnie its just a thought but.... I dont know how high up a sand dune is for you to get a signal but if its reasonable you could get one of those telescoping poles and attach your phone to it and use it via blue tooth.

I've never though of that. I have a old 15' rod that ended up being a POS as a rod but makes a great flag pole.

I did that many years ago with a cell phone attennae, attached it to a 14 foot rod and put it out the window of the rv - thanks for reminding about that.

I am considering a cell power extender thing that my oil field buddies use - but how would I do what you are saying via blue tooth ?

As of yet, I havent started thinking of ways to work from down there - but I may get to that. I am a software developer that in the last couple of years have worked from home, hospital, rehab facility, motel, and I see no reason not to consider at least, a light weight camper and just stay down there a while.

Thanks

I rarely have any luck getting service on PINS, I usually lose service before I pass the visitor center. It may occasionally pop back up but not for long. No I have regained service down at the jetty a couple of times where I have been able to txt and once it was good enough to make a call. To be on the safe side I always let my wife know what my plans are as far when I think I will hit the beach and when I think I will be off.

As far as water depth goes I haven't noticed a difference in depth the farther south you go. There are some spots that dip but overall it seems to be the same to me.

Thanks for the info - i was curious about the guts being deeper or not. I had always thought they were but was too busy fishing to check.

And i was thinking about the time (still in the future) when the fish were biting so hard and so much, I was just going to stay until the vehicle was full. The story about Jesus in the bible telling the apostles to 'throw the net over there' and they did and filled up the boat comes to mind - Im hoping He would pop in sometime and direct my casting to 'over there' and the same would happen to me. But I bet He is too busy to help me with my fishing.

Donnie,
Fortunately I dont live in San Antonio but I do work there,
its a hands free area and I have been wearing a bluetooth setup for over a year. I can get a fair distance from my phone with them. Also they are great for stereo listening to music and even the ocean surf sometimes.
If you dont have an extendable pole long enough, several old sets of tent poles or anything to get you high enough up to get a signal. Just use a small bunjee or two to attach to the top.
Hate to see a fellow fisherman "flounder" around on top of dune or the ground (pun intended).
