My first 4wd vehicle was a subie outback, a compromise with my wife, she wanted an rx7, i wanted a 4-runner. She got the rx7, I got the subie, this was back in 1985 or so. I loved the subie, but we had too many kids, too many pets, and too many sports teams to transport around so we got the typical suburban 1500, 4wd, roof rack, all you need. Used that to go to the island back in the days before kids sports start taking all my time.

Now kids are gone, the island is still there, and more awesome than ever, and I am back to a subie outback, awd, versus the old 4wd. I am running up and down the beach - with no issues yet (just jinxed myself) and the gas mileage on this thing is great. From my house out in annaville, it takes 4 gallons to get to the sand and back to the house, yesterday, went to 17.5 miles down, and was out 5 gallons. I remember the old days, going with guys in the pickups/jeeps, carrying extra tanks of gas to be sure they could make it. A few weekends or so , I saw a caravan of 4 jeeps, all nice new and shiny. The first 3 jeeps were full of fishing gear, camping stuff, kayaks, the 4 jeep , was full of gas cans, so things maybe havnt changed for jeep addicts.

Subie figured out the gas mileage thing around 2011-2012 or so, i had watched them , it sucked for a long time, but now this one a 4cyl , is rated 33-36, has a 19 gallon tank and handles nice. The down side is what you can carry - my son's F150 has room to put a couple of subies in the back, so I do have to be careful about what I take. What does everyone else drive down there ?

Here is what I started to take. Did a few upgrades so I don't have to worry so much when I go deep down PINS....or anywhere else for that matter.

In the past, I had a couple Jeep Commanders (AWD) and they were great. Got an F150 4x4 and it was good. Roomy. Traded the truck last year for a Roush Mustang, and since it will not touch the sand, got a gently used Nissan Frontier Pro 4X. Little truck doesnt have the room the F150 did, but it is a blast to drive and best Ive had on the sand so far.[/img]

I've got a 2007 gmc sierra z71. Not very good on gas, but haven't had any issues driving on the beach. Before that I was in a 94 Chevy z71. That thing was a beater but saw lots of beach time. I've been happy with my z71s

Since I can't afford just a beach truck my ranch truck has to do it all.

Dodge 3/4 ton crew cab 4x4 diesel..I have yet to have any issues going down the beach with it.

It all depends on what you want to carry. I went down 50miles down pins saturday in my silverado 4x4 35in tires 6in lift. Only spent 1/4 tank down there and back, didnt use 4x4 once. Thats because beach was hard packed sand. Avg speed 50mph. Last year took thebsame trip same time if year and i spent almost 3/4 tank. In 4x4 most of the way 20mph avg speed. Being in 4x4 uses alot of fuel.

I have been thinking about buying a new Honda Ridgeline with full time 4 wheel drive. I think it would do well on PINS, but everyone tells me I would have to turn in my man card if I buy one. Do you think if I put my Vietnam War license plates on it I could save my mancard?

Look at me, I drive a subie. And i have loved them forever. I drove into a blizzard in 87 with a 4 month old baby and my wife - cars off the road all over the place, that subie was strong and solid all the way.
