does anyone have an opinion on or know how the "dead zone" occurring in the gulf will actually affect the fishing in our area?

I forget exactly what I read about it years ago but i think it's a result of fertilizers running into the Mississippi River that causes an algae bloom over a vast area off LA mostly west of the river. It doesn't reach us here.

Its scary, they keep saying its the size of one of those northern states. But then so are most of our backyards.

I've been hearing scary stories of the "dead zone' since I was a teenager in the 70's. It's never affected the fishing in any way that I could ever tell.

Yes. It's a yearly thing, and it's [meh]........
If it was such an environmental disaster, then the northern Gulf ought to be devoid of life [which it ain't]
It does not reach us here. Maybe some years near Galveston, and heavy flood years as far south as the Colorado river outlet (last year), and we did see low Dissolved Oxygen levels here, but the fish simply avoid those areas.

In a nutshell. [MEH]...... Rolling Eyes

Exactly. I have the same view on the oil spill scare and "saving the planet" that so many misguided souls preach. Mind you, I'm NOT saying that oil spills are a good thing, just a point to ponder: Think about how many ships were blown up and/or sunk during the two world wars, only 29 years apart. LOTS of heavy fuel oil spilled into the various oceans and seas.... WAY, more than anytime since, yet "the planet" didn't go to hell in a handbag. Nature finds a way, which is exactly what has happened many times before, after extiction events, none of which were caused by humanity! Embarassed
