Really got the trout dialed in the past few trips from Pita island all the way to shamrock. Have caught multiple trout over 20 inches with the best being 25. I think the smaller bag size has definitely helped the trout population in our area.
After we caught a solid 25 inch trout yesterday I hooked a dink trout that jumped about 2 feet out of the water, which I thought was strange. As I reeled this 12-13 inch trout in a noticed the reason it broke the water was becaue something was chasing it. I thought it had to be an oversized red because I've seen reds do that to trout before, but when it got right next to the boat I saw it was a huge trout. I can't get an estimate on the trout and I didn't hook it, but it had to be a monster to try to eat that 13 inch dink., but couldn't have been any record breaker since it didn't take it down. All I can say is that we had a 25 inch fish in the boat already but this trout was much bigger. Left after that as there was thunder in the area and we already had limits of trout in the cooler.
Croaker is the ticket for limits and lures for bigger fish. I saw some videos about down south lures and tried them out. Past 2 trips we've caught 3 trout over 22 inches on down south lures. Shrimp gets picked apart too easily by perch and if your croaker is big enough you'll be able to fight off the smaller fish. We've had luck in all of our regular fishing holes, so it's not really a location thing. If you've got some nice croaker and the right presentation, you'll catch some trout. Can't find a red or a black drum at all though. I'll probably have to get the kayak muddy and stock up on fishbites for some of them.
Here's a picture of yesterday's haul. Hoping to get back out and target some reds and black drum in some different waters once the weather is right.

Thanks for the detailed report. Your heart must have been pounding seeing that big trout going after the dink. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Nice haul and appreciate the report. I've done pretty good the last 2 trips down as well. The bag limit has improved the quality cor sure. _________________ wishin i was fishin! |

Something similar happened to me last year near Brown and Roots. My body froze when I saw the big trout rise, inspect little trout, then slowly dive back out of sight. That fish still haunts my dreams. |
