Here is "one" of the rubs with the current proposal (some food for thought for tonight).
This Figure comes directly out of the 2014 Gulf of Mexico Red Snapper Update Assessment (SEDAR 31)
http://sedarweb.org/docs/suar/SEDARUpdateRedSnapper2014_FINAL_9.15.2015.pdf
[Take note, the orientation is backwards - 'East Gulf, i.e. East of the MS River, is on the left; 'West Gulf' is on the right: Plus the axis for the two graphs are different, so don't make the mistake of directly comparing the magnitude]
When it comes to 'catch' anounts, Texas ain't the problem. Even with Year-Round State Water trips, we are paled by the catch in Florida and Alabama. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Some context of the Figure. The old MRIP numbers were recalibrated for this assessment, resulting in the differences in the red and blue lines for each side of the Gulf.
Since 1990, the Eastern Gulf is where the 'quota' gets busted every year. Upwards of 3X the catch, East vs. West. Consistently. |
