Hi Folks. Last time we were camping on PINS we were at 24.5 miles. That night I saw two big party boats about one mile further south and it looked like they were both about a mile from shore. I think one was the wharf cat. Is there a reef of some kind that close to shore?? I was wondering what it is and how far off shore? Thinking about taking the kayaks out there.

| State rocks aren't very far offshore and reachable by kayak, but I've always associated the upper 30s and lower 40s to that area. I'm no expert though on the topography and sure someone with a little more knowledge can shed more light. |

INTERESTING!
that is a hell of a long run for a party boat to go fish in 30 feet of water. I don't know of any rocks 1 mile off shore, but a little further south of there, rocks are pretty common about 5 or 6 miles out.
does the wharf cat do snapper trips in federal water? |

| Are you sure you were not seeing shrimp boats? I cannot imagine a party boat making a run down there for what is really, a very small piece of structure. |

There are a couple of party boats (originally from SPI) that are permitted to fish in state waters and they move their base of operation to Port Mansfield at certain times throughout the year. I hear and read a lot of complaints about them hammering the rocks that are north of PM.
I have never seen them personally but I don't think either of them are cats that look like the Wharf Cat which is not permitted for state waters.
And the rocks north of PM are not a "small piece of structure". If you take a look at Hoover's Hang Book you will see that they stretch for miles and there are several hundred sets of numbers. |

no, but they have done scientific trips to that area if they have someone on board that has an Exempt/Scientific Collection permit....

and yeah, it's a long run from Port A...I think it took us around 4.5 hours to get down there last time...
