Good evening friends, I will be going to Corpus this coming weekend. And we will try some surf fishing (We tried the Port A. jetties a couple of times before) for the first time. What would be some good locations? I was thinking PINS, but we will be taking my wifes Crossover SUV for the trip (2 WD nissan murano), so I dont know how far I can get. Also, what type of rig to use and bait? Thank you for your answers.

Beach conditions are changing on an hourly basis, so not much help on that front. Check the tides and plan accordingly. Weed goes from horrible to 'meh', again, on an hourly basis in the Spring. The hotline for PINS is your best bet for up-to-date conditions.

Rig, bait, and other questions..... it all depends on Mother Nature and the tides (which have been WACKO this Spring). Next weekend has single high and lows (BIG SWINGS) around the New Moon, with high at night, ..... so add some wind and it could sneak up on you. Or, it may pack things down and you have a highway to drive on down to the 20+++ area.

Definitely good advice there.

Wind forecast have been all over the place so far.. could be 10-15 SE.. but more likely 15-20 SE... Get a high tide and 20+ SE and the waves will make it to the dunes. Not too big a deal except if you are parked each little wave slowly sinks your vehicle to the axles without you noticing it.. Time to go...NOT.. your stuck.

rigs. Generally a pyramid weight with a cut mullet or menhaden of some sort will catch a variety of fish from small sharks, jacks, and redfish. Using shrimp in the first or second gut will result in anything from croaker, whiting, and gulf trout.

If Its in the 15 to 20 range probably need a spider weight to hold it in place.

If it's that wind I probably wouldn't be throwing lures for trout.. just too much work to fight the wind every cast. I'll let some of the surf fishing gurus fill in more.

Two fine responses. I will add my 2 C. Make a stop and get you some biscuit weights 2-4 oz. If these will not hold in the first or second gut because of wave action. Try a spider or sputnik weight in the 2-4 oz range. Any of these tagged on to a tandem tourist rig with 4-6ot circle hooks will be fine. Make sure your rods can handle these type of weights. If the reel fails you can always just keep backing up the beach to land a fish. If you can reel in your terminal tackle and weights after you have been robbed. It makes for miserable trips. Main line 20-30# braid is paramount. 8-20# mono has a hard time taking the stress of a loaded cast with weights. Some guys will add a 30# mono leader around 10-50 yds on the end of the braid. I have never found this to be overly helpful in terms of bites. It does help with wave action rubbing you main line on the sand bars.

Tourist rig can be found in HEB, tackle shops, gas stations.

Get pink shrimp bites. straight up on a leader. If no bites of these then your not gonna catch nothing. Also very useful for catching your cut bait.

Hope this gives you a little info. Should be enough to keep catching gafftop and whiting anyway.
