Hi all -

A friend of mine is making a custom spinning rod for me out of a St. Croix blank. The first one he made and sent to me got destroyed in transit Crying or Very sad , but it was obviously very nice - much nicer than the bargain store variety equipment that I usually use. He is replacing it for me with a 7-8' medium heavy rod that will be good for bay, pier and jetty fishing. His saltwater experience is surf fishing for stripers in the summer in New England.

My question: What is a good spinning reel for matching this rod? I would like something of higher quality, but not one that will break the bank. Something that can handle a big red or jack off the pier and that has some resilience to saltwater environment.

It is very kind of him to make this for me - but he did tell me that under no circumstances am I to mount a $15 grocery store reel on it!

Thanks in advance for your input!

It's really gonna come down to your budget.. With that being said, IMO you can't go wrong with a Shimano Stradic. I have a few Stradic 2500 FJ for bay and a 5000 for surf/pier. Have performed flawlessly after a few years just by simply rinsing 'em off after each use. Good luck!

The best option would be to get two reels (one for bay and one for jetties) but if you only want to buy one, look at either the Shimano Spheros 4000 or Diawa BG. Both under 200$ and also waterproof in case they get dunked or you want to go striper fishing. I have the Spheros it's sooo smooth.
