I received my renewal notice from www.uscgdocumentation.us. Very official looking document. The wife opened it and asked me if I wanted it paid and I said sure it's not much ( I should have said the amount $26.00) Anyway she paid it $75.00 and sent it in. The guy pays the renewal and pockets the difference. So nice he evens suggests you can pay up to 5 years ahead! This is not illegal but it is very unethical. Anyhow watch out for this scam.

Vessel documentation is a national form of registration. It is one of the oldest functions of Government, dating back to the 11th Act of the First Congress. Documentation provides conclusive evidence of nationality for international purposes, provides for unhindered commerce between the states, and admits vessels to certain restricted trades, such as coastwise trade and the fisheries. Since 1920, vessel financing has been enhanced through the availability of preferred mortgages on documented vessels.

You still have to pay Texas for registration. The boat was documented when I bought it. It used to be a one time fee charged at origination or transfer of ownership. Then the Fed decided to make it a yearly fee. I would drop it if it was 75 a year but 26 i can live with. The guy that scammed us is a marine surveyor who is sending out misleading paper work. Only diff is .us instead of .gov in the web address. No biggie, I won't fall for it again.

Guess I've never heard of it. I try to avoid doing anything I don't have to by law. LOL
