I received this email "Can you tell me when they changed the buoy marker numbers in the upper laguna madre? Its been a number of years since I fished Baffin. But I went down there last weekend and noticed that the numbers are different. The mouth of Baffin used to be #223; now its 133. Bird Island Basin used to be 121, now its 77. Just curious when they changed the numbers and why, if you know. Thanks!"

Can anyone answer this? Yeah I know I should know the answer but I don't Smile

Thanks!

Tyler

it was at least two years ago. They pulled out a lot of the floating anchored buoys and replaced with fixed poles.

what OFT II said, plus they have been sometimes using miscellaneous buoys to replace those that disappear in the past...they aren't all nice and pretty in order anymore...

and what's the big deal? you already knew that you were at the mouth of Baffin, or at Bird, correct? unless you were running blindly in the fog without GPS or radar, then the numbers really don't mean too much, I suppose...

So in a nutshell, Marker 37 ain't marker "37" no more????

Cause if the rest of the numbering system got reset, ........... Cool

That's all the Army corps of engineers responsibility. Never paid much attention to the numbers and sure don't miss dodging those cans in the dark.

37 is still there, as I'm sure you're well aware of....I've just noticed a few hodge-podge cans along the lines...something to do when you have "space madness" on a long cruise...

I thought it was the Coasties that did the markers?

It is not the first time, back way back when, I can remember Bird Island Basin was marker 59. Although that was before there was a entrance that you had to pay at and the cut off road down to bird island wasn't even paved and when you got down close to the water it was just sand. I am sure in the future some bueracrat will justify spending more money and change them again.
Oh well !..........cC

My buddy Sal US Coastguard was aboard the tender that changed the marker numbers I'll see if I can get him to give an answer on here. He explained it all to me but in one ear and out the other.
