| A co worker gave me this motor and then my boss gave me a jon boat and trailer to go with it. Not a bad week so far but the guy said the motor ran great about 12 years ago. I need a trusty mechanic to get it going if anyone knows of such a person. Thank guys, I know I'll find someone on here that can answer that question. |

8 years....hopefully it was used in fresh water. I would bet the impeller is dry rotted into crumbles. I would replace that first then hook a gas line to it a see if it will fire. You can actually check the fire first just to see. Just don't let it but just for a second or 2 so it doesn't get hot. Hope it turns out to be a good motor. Will it turn over when you pull the cord? you might want to shoot a squirt of oil into the cylinders before you do anything. Hope it works well for you. google johnson 1885 8 hp there are a few things on you tube that might help. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

Good advice on "see if it fires first".
Then replace impeller, also change lube in lower unit, and spark plug. Some that owned one chime in if evenrude parts are interchangeable. |

I have been through and through 9.9's and 15hp motors. I have a 25 tiller two stoke now I am working on. These guys are spot on as far as checking for fire/compression. Check Iboat.com for parts. _________________ If you dont believe in god, you havent been to Texas. |

I can't tell you how important this advice is...pull the plugs and shoot something, ANYTHING in there.....and clean the bowls in the carbs before you even do that....
