I am only starting to bay fish out of Con Brown harbour and are pretty scared that i will get myself stuck in shallow water. Was thinking of getting a guide to learn more about that area. The question is if the guids are pricing themselves out of customers. I just can not see myself paying $600 for a 4 hour trip. Guides operating in fresh water generally ask half of what the saltwater guids ask. Maybe they have enough customers with deep pockets that are willing to pay.

How many people did you plan on the guide taking?
are you planning on fishing or do you just want him to show you around?

Four people half day comes to $150 per person. Pretty reasonable.
Do freshwater guides have to get USCG credentials yet? If not your comparing a grape to a watermelon for operating cost. That's just the beginning. Remember if the salt doesn't get it the sun will.

Hi CaptPartic not my intention to anger. I am alone i basically want to learn to navigate so i can go solo, but also as a bonus learn the techniques that the guys use in the bay. I have used the navionics app and my depth finder but i think it is a question of the lack of confidence. My boat do not run very shallow it is similar as a BlueWave. My frend went on a guided trip a few monthes ago, the guide parked over a hole for the whole time and let them catch hardheads. Something like that will be a total wast of my time and resources.

I see so many questions been ask on the forums of where to go and how to get there, how to rig. I wish one of the knowledgeable guys want to compiled a training video on our bay navigation and fishing techniques. I think it will be a hot item, i wil surely buy one

You just to find a nice local guy and offer to pay for his fuel ⛽️ and buy him lunch. You don't need a guide just a good fisherman. If you were fishing over here I would be glad to show you the area for just that. But you are way over there. Start out a little at a time and each time you go just go a little further each time. Before long you will know where to go.

That isn't a guide, that's a idiot with a maybe a guide license that doesn't know jack. Why would they even pay to catch hard heads????? Guiding is not this get rich quick scam that a lot of non-guides think it is. You have big insurance costs, boat payments more than some peoples mortgages, fuel costs (a 200-300hp eats fuel), scouting time, bait costs (because 75% of guide customers cant use lures and bait will typically from spring to fall produce better), boat maintenance, trailer maintenance, guide license, USCG license, etc.. Its not cheap!

Do not know who this guide was. My friend came down from Colorado and i could not take him out with my boat due to work. He hired this guy and that is what happened. I felt pretty bad afterwards i probly should have made a plan to get of work. My thoughts was that this guy was thinking tourists and saw a way to make and easy duck.

Go with a guide that proposes catch + release only; and it may only be fly guides exclusively. But anyways, when those guys take you out for a "full day"...you'll be going out at sun up and coming in at dusk. Which is better for learning. None of that "get your limit and be back at the dock by 10AM" BS.

I don't know any guides that charge $400 for a full day. a full day should be at around 8 hours on the water. I don't know any guides that guarantee dawn to dusk trips... that could be upwards of 14 hours plus clean up time. no one does that.
I also don't know any guides charging $600 for a 4 hour trip. that's ridiculous.
although there are some guides around here that end up doing that if they bang out a limit quickly.

full day typically starts at $550-$600 from the lowest I've seen, up to 800.

half day rates are usually around 450

I've done this with a number of people and now they've become pretty decent fisherpersons.
