My son has a birthday coming up and i wanted to get him a new spinning reel for his birthday. He already go a wright mcgill i think that is the name rod from his grandparents. It is for catching trout and redfish. Thanks

Diawa Strikeforce , got one as a birthday gift it's actually a nice looking reel for the price. Can't wait to see how it holds up on a drum this winter. You can only go up from there. Mine is a 4000 series. My go to is a Shimano Stradic.

Pfleuger president has been working well for me. A plus has been after a couple of years when it needs to be cleaned/repaired they always offer me a brand new one instead for 1/2 price.

Don't forget the Penn Battle II 2500. Tough reel at a $100 bucks. My son and I put this reel thru the mill all summer sight casting reds, drum and trout. Just my .02 cents.

I've had good luck with the Shimano Sedona 50-80 bucks depending on size. Siennas won't break the bank either.

Shimano Solstace or Sedona for under $100. Take some abuse but need a bit more care.
If you want one to last a Stradic Ci4. Those have been my reels for years and I'm not easy on them.

2500 series is a good size for the set up your looking at.

i use the penn battle 2 reels for my guests and friends that don't fish much or know how to fish. They have been really durable over the last couple years, heavy, but they take a licking and keep on ticking.

It all depends on how your reels will be treated and what you want. The way I see it...a spinning reel does not have any parts that move during the cast so they will all cast about the same (yes, you can get into spool lip designs and such if you want to nit-pick). I don't like taking spinning reel apart to clean them so I just fish them until they die and then buy another. Dropping them off to get them cleaned could take a few weeks and it will cost you $10-20 so I just buy a new $20 reel.

Because of my philosophy I stick with the cheap stuff. The last few years we have been using the Shimano AX series for the bay. The main reason that I like this model over many of the other cheap spinners is that it has instant anti-reverse (roller bearing). Most cheap reels don't have this feature.

We use the AX1000 spooled with 10 pound braid and the AX2500 spooled with 15 or 20 pound braid. We have even landed redfish up to 30" on the little 1000 model.

I just give them a quick rinse most of the time but sometimes they don't even get rinsed. I get 2-3 years out of them and then just get a new one if they get stiff or something. If the braid is still good you can just pull the spool off the old reel and drop it on the new one and you are ready to go.

I have never seen this reel for sale in a local store but you can get them on the net for around $20. Amazon and Walmart.com usually have the best prices but look around.

If you prefer to have the same reel for years because of sentimental value or something then this might not be the right path for you.
