Started fishing PINS at about 3 PM this afternoon. Finger mullet were plentiful so I tried whole, live and cut-up to no avail. Decided to change gears and target pomps with the cheap little pre-made pomp rigs that I bought and pink shrimp fishbites. Caught one hand-sized pomp and several whiting, and this this brute surprised me.

It took half a fishbite on a pomp rig after all of the mullet I threw out. It had some hardware from a previous fight that I took out as well. Took some pics, got it revived and off it went. Came in a little over 36". I guess you never know what they're going to want.

PS sorry for not resizing the pics.

I've been looking for some little floats to put on my pomp rigs but I can't find any. Did you make the pomp rig yourself or store bought? Any idea on where to get small yellow floats?

Nice fish there!
You got mine beat.
True about never knowing what they'll want but to be honest I've never caught anything on Fishbites alone.
YET!

I was lazy and just bought the pre-made rigs, but I think someone here suggested these would work http://www.amazon.com/3M-Classic-earplugs-Pair-Box/dp/B007GBUC7M

lol I've only ever caught whiting and pompano with fishbites, so you can imagine my surprise. I just wished they lasted longer (unless I'm storing them wrong).

I picked up some smallish floats in Orange and yellow from Roy's. I just had to cut them in half.

Just use "rig float" in the search bar just about anywhere and you will find them. Google comes up with plenty of websites. Ebay comes up with quite a few and a handful come up on Amazon.

The cheapest ones will be on tackle/lure building websites but they may have minimum orders and you usually have to pay for shipping. May not be a big deal if you need other stuff but if you only need floats the shipping may be high. If you only need floats the best place is probably Ebay.

Here are some bags of 100 on Ebay in different sizes and colors. Not my auction nor do I know the seller.

Nice red ....evaded death twice maybe more. Could be he escaped a commercial fisherman's trot line. I caught one once with 2 circle hooks in it's mouth. I figured if he did that then I might as well let him go. Good deal on the release. Alot of folks would have tossed him in the box. You are a real fisherman at heart.

Pompano are nibblers and generally the larger hooks make it more difficult for them to clamp on...not that they will not work. Most pomp fishermen prefer a smaller 2/0-3/0 circle hook baited with small bits of shrimp and/or fish bies or clam strips. They really like crusteceans(sp?) as their favorite food are coquina clams. Roy's in Flour Bluff sells the little "marshmellow" floats in yellow and maybe orange that you can use on the pomp rigs.
